  • Alibaba's Impact On The Value Of Yahoo [View article]
Volume, estimated buybacks, and price movement in Yahoo's stock price over the past year (15 pages) may be interesting to some. Lots of commentary:

Only YHOO knows what their stock is worth. There was a massive trade of 1.6 million shares at close of trading today, which may be a stock buyback or one of the large institutions doubling up. The bounce back today was solid, and with the SPX bouncing 8 points from it's low, we may have made an interim bottom in both SPX and Nasdaq 100 stocks.

    Another gem from DoctoRx.

Institutional ownership in YHOO is huge with 82% of the float, and these guys are not selling till the IPO actually nears.

Alibaba and the Five Thieves will meet in Hong Kong next Wednesday to carve out plans to divvy up the spoils to give to their preferred customers, whereas the retail small investor will have to buy an overly hyped Alibaba stock at inflated prices. It's better to play the IPO through a proxy such as YHOO or Softbank. That's how I intend to participate.

  • Buy An Opening Dip Friday In Yahoo? [View article]
The next big event will be the release of the IPO document which will be sliced and diced to figure out the "true" value of Yahoo's stake. I'm good with $150B. In the end, the institutional holders will decide if they want to take profits or let it ride till Alibaba is in a steady state. We'll soon find out if Alibaba was sandbagging all along.

    Hi Pamela,

It's not uncommon for business journalists to borrow ideas from blogs and online postings. It happens all the time. Fox "Business News" is the worst culprit and their "analysts" are notorious for plagiarizing other people's ideas. Perhaps CNBC should put them out of their misery.

    Great call.

Softbank up around 6 percent just now after confirmation from Alibaba that they will IPO in New York. Expecting to see same percentage move in YHOO tomorrow morning, although YHOO's market cap and ownership of Alibaba is smaller. Just an opinion and not supported by data.

    $200 Billion

Alibaba, which operates online markets for products from Louis Vuitton bags to Boston lobsters, posted its fourth straight quarterly profit on surging sales. Net income attributable to ordinary shareholders was $792 million in the three months ended September, a 12 percent increase from the June quarter, according to a January presentation from Yahoo! Inc., which owns a 24 percent stake. Revenue rose 51 percent to $1.78 billion.

Analyst valuations of Alibaba rose 28 percent after the earnings, with the company worth $153 billion, according to the average of 10 estimates compiled by Bloomberg News in February. That would make it bigger than 95 percent of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

Macquarie Group Ltd. estimated Alibaba could be worth $200 billion, while Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in a Jan. 29 report put the company’s value at about $150 billion.

Google has a market capitalization of $394 billion; Amazon $172 billion; and Facebook, owner of the world’s largest social network, $172 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

  • Alibaba's Impact On The Value Of Yahoo [View article]
TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares in SoftBank Corp jumped as much as 6.6 percent to a seven-week high of 8,239 yen on Monday morning after its Chinese e-commerce affiliate Alibaba Group Holdings decided to hold its long-awaited share listing in the United States.

Alibaba said in a statement on Sunday it had decided to begin the U.S. IPO process, ending months of speculation about where it would go public.

The Chinese firm is in discussions with six banks to underwrite the deal, set to be the most high-profile public offering since Facebook Inc's listing nearly two years ago.

HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group said Sunday that it will go public on a U.S. stock exchange in a move analysts say might raise up to $15 billion in the year's biggest initial public offering.

The announcement confirming plans for a U.S. offering ended months of speculation over where the company would list its shares after talks for a Hong Kong stock sale fell apart last year.

Thanks for the link. Today's action was mostly short covering, after it broke above $38. If the market rallies next week, could easily see your "low" target.
