Thanks for taking the time to do this study. It was a neat read after what I can imagine was a lot of work to reference old data.

  • Quality Opportunities For Dividend Growth Investing [View article]
    On Base,

Thanks for the article. Chowder has definitely been an influential investor in terms of sharing some golden advice/practices. I currently use a two part system of Quality and Value scoring (maybe one day I'll get around to writing about it), of which Chowder is responsible for almost 40% of the Quality metric derived from his Chowder Rule and Value Line recommendation.

I'm not sure if he point this out or another SA member, but most libraries offer free access to at least a limited view of Value Line, at least in terms of finding out the Safety Rating. Most also have an ability to sign on to the library's account remotely from your home computer or if you're on the road.

    Good luck with your investing!

  • My K.I.S.S. Dividend Growth Portfolio 2nd Quarter Update [View article]
Thanks for the article. Lots of matches on my holding and watch lists, which is comforting.

I guess I need to take a look at the S&P definitions as well since I too thought the star ranking at the top of a Stock Report was a quality measure while the Value ranking further on down was a reference of if they thought the price was expensive. Have you thought about including the Morningstar star ranking? With free access via most library cards, it might be a nice compliment to the S&P without much extra work.

    Thanks again

  • Market Strategies - Buy Low, Sell High [View instapost]
Geez, and here I thought I had my process down for buying stocks. This one seems too logical to into the mix it goes. Seriously though, thanks for the lesson. It is especially applicable for me today as I finish reading Bob Wells's article questioning how to deal with the current highs.

  • The Wisdom Of Not Reinvesting Dividends [View article]
Hi Michael D., I think your statement may be true if you selected companies all paying out the exact same dividend yield at the initial time of purchase. However, wouldn't this risk a lack of diversification due to certain sectors tending to pay higher yields? So with your guideline, my REITs would become disproportionately large in my collection. Although I like the increase in average yield of my portfolio, I wouldn't feel comfortable over-weighting in these as I view them to be more of the riskier sections of my stock collection. A second issue to dissuade me from this approach is the risk of still purchasing those REIT's, etc. at an overvalued price (even though they were higher yield).

  • To Sell Or Not To Sell - That Is The Question [View article]
Great Article! It has everything I'm looking for; easy read, neat analogy, a bit of culture, and some guidelines to consider and I continue my education/construction of personal portfolio management. Thanks so much! Also, a lot of thanks to the folks adding comments/perspectives and your continued dialogue with them (and them with each other). A number of useful nuggets to ponder have come out of this section as well.

  • Start Investing Now For Retirement Wealth [View article]
Thanks for the article! I'm forwarding it to family and friends. Like others mentioned above, they never really thought of investing beyond the savings account and the occasional CD. I'm glad I found DGI (by way of SA) with a significant degree of time to take better advantage of its benefits.
I also like the penny comparison. I found the message to be pretty clear. If I were to teach a class on investing, I think it would be a good first day lesson to work as a hook.

  • My Retirement Income Quarterly Review - The Final Wrap Up [View article]
    Hi Bob,
Thanks for the great info and start point for setting up my own plan. In the article you mentioned referring to a select few SA contributors when determining fair market value for a stock. Would you mind sharing? I've a growing list of people I follow simply because I love the knowledge/perspective they pass on but if you have a few usual suspects for reliable (or at least not over-inflated) estimates, it would definitely be welcomed.
