  • The Security I Like Best: Philip Morris International [View article]
P/U more at $84.93 the other day and a bit more today at $82.78.

Hopefully, mgmt is scooping up shares down here too (buyback).

Excellent point. Solid co, solid stock. It doesn't get the press that EPD does or have the yield that a QRE or BBEP does, but yoy continues to plow ahead.

    Wish I owned it since 1981 : )

  • Pick Lorillard Over Altria To Benefit From E-Cigarettes [View article]
I would definitely rec owning both LO and MO...and I do. Gov't meddling could change LO forever, though I think something along the line of extra regulation (extra warnings for menthol maybe) will be the eventual compromise. When more clarity on menthol issue comes out, we should see LO continue to move up though.

MO is an extremely well run co (SABMiller is great to have a piece of) with +5% dividend and one of the world wide's moats. Gov't already enjoying hefty taxes from it. No reason to not continue business as usual imo, despite the zealots and fascists out there.

Nice work, John. I would have pulled the trigger under $83 except I was super busy at work all day and have a strong feeling that I'll get another chance to buy below $83, maybe even in the $80-81 range, if I can catch the lower end of another red day.

I did add-@ $84.93. I'll do it again if it dips below $83.

  • Is BP A 'Buy' Or 'Hold' For 2014? [View article]
<If one discounts BP's pending legal situation, BP is a "STRONG BUY".
    Otherwise ?.>

Otherwise...I'd say it's still a buy, albeit averaging in slowly might be the most prudent choice. The dividend looks safe, but whether spill payments rise or fall going into the future is another story.

The 2 factors that jump out to me in the above article are the P/B just above 1 and the new GoM discovery w COP.

  • Will Phillips 66 Drop Down The Sand Hills And Southern Hills Pipelines To MLP In 2014? [View article]
Interesting...$WTIC had bounced off its 200ma, but then reversed course and went below to start the new year. With cautious optimism w re to econ reports coming out and of course, Fed help, I would have thought we would see the 200ma hold. I didn't look at recent inventory #s though.

Anyone up to date on those??

Maybe someone is a trader rather than an investor. With the market where it is, there are worse ideas out there.

Oil looks set to go higher here. It will be interesting to see if there's an inflection point where PSX corrects relative to oil moving back over $100. It may hit $85-90 first though.

PSX will trade at an extra premium (imo) as long as Buffett is involved/connected to it and he and/or BH talks about it periodically. I'm sure there are some holding out that he'll buy the whole thing.

So much of it depends on your time horizon and how soon you need the $, i.e. your risk tolerance is likely based on those factors.

It's still a stock picker's market, but the pickins is gettin' thinner and thinner.

    BC:

How would ESV look if you ran it through the same analysis???

I've followed NOV (on and off) for several years, and Barkeater and jlport57's comments are right on the money. It's been touted very highly, rec'd up the yin yang, etc, but others have done much, much better coming out of the recession. If it's so undervalued, why haven't deep pockets bid it up more??? There obviously is something they are seeing that we are not.

I'm more interested in ESV at this point. With their bumping the dividend up over 5%, it's looking very attractive in the mid 50s. OTOH, it's another one that has been touted as undervalued yet doesn't seem to move a whole lot. At least with ESV, you get paid +5% to wait.

  • Philip Morris: 2013 Pain Almost Over [View article]
<I don't think that NYC's stand on vaping will be the long term approach, either. Especially if smell is carefully reviewed with vaping products.>

Agreed. Once they figure out how to tax it, they'll lay off some. How much though will be interesting.
