I think we have a lot of Apple lovers here.
Though it amounts to zip, I think you're right Cullen. It's BS, and all involved go along with it b/c the payoff (the profiting by those playing along) is too good not to.
Income Investors Should Be Buying Equities [View article]
<How can you go wrong when you are investing in great large cap American corporations that share the wealth by paying fair dividends to shareholders. Generally speaking, dividend paying large cap equities have excellent prospects for capital appreciation, too. You are investing in your own quality of life and the future of our great country when you make a relatively safe investment in successful American corporations, employing mainly Americans, that have an established practice of paying fair and generous dividends.>
Much could-and imo, will-go wrong. Your comment sounds like something from the 1960s-not 2010. What sources do you have that these blue chips hire mostly Americans?? I say that one of the reasons they have been able to continue to fork over divvies is b/c they STOPPED hiring American workers, outsourced, and started paying lower (much) wages to some schmoe in BFE who was so used to crumbs that .15 to .20 cents an hour was kingly. When that stopped being economically viable in Mexico and Japan, we moved to China, Malaysia, Singapore, et al. As Chinese workers decide they deserve more, there will come a tipping point, as there always does, where the factories will be moved to Vietnam and the like.
Now, if that were the only problem, blue chips would be a golden choice. However, with our own debt problems, unemployment, deleveraging, higher taxes around the corner, etc., running to Vietnam won't help these companies. As they lay off more and more workers, cut back on any and everything to keep rising margins, and boomers begin taking the retirement $ out instead of putting it in the markets, where will the $ come from to support the valuations that are being thrown around (even the conservative ones)??
Those who've suggested waiting for better prices before buying in are right. Yes, the yields you speak of are nice, but give it some more time. You'll like those yields even more.

As long as your UBTI doesn't exceed $1,000, I think you're safe with them in an IRA. It's so rare for anyone to hold them there because they are already tax deferred that even most CPAs are unfamiliar with the situation.
I think you'd have to have several hundred thousand dollars worth to have any problem though...

I don't (currently) see any div cut danger for COP. What I do see is fear of the unknown re the upcoming split. They're not doing the split to lose money (of course). The odds are in their favor that this will be a good thing for all involved. I also see it as an extension of the shedding of assets that began a few years ago. They've been working hard at becoming a leaner petrol entity, so to speak. From what I've read, mgmt (read-Mulva(sp?)) isn't held in the highest regard, but I feel that their commitment to DG was something they announced with the split already in mind (but still unannounced at that time).
My only real concern at the present time is the price of WTIC. Should the world fall into a deep recession-or worse, and we see $40 a barrel (for example) for an extended period of time, then I'd be concerned about earnings AND the div, not to mention DG. Until then, I'll stick around for more dividends, and hopefully some cap app too.

Check out their business model. The debt's that high on purpose-not due to mismgmt or a whim or bad luck. They're aware of the debt level and have the means to cut it down should they need/want to.

At least you guys can all just go home if you don't like it. I work in a friggin grocery store full time, and not only have to deal with the kids, their moms, and everyone else on their cell phones, but I have to police the kids that work for me, many of whom have learned to text with one (!) hand while somehow cashiering at the same time (no joke).

<Here's a kicker for you. During the 5 year period that these stocks were held, there were opportunities to buy additional shares at less that the original purchase price. That would have made these results even more dramatic!>
The above is what I'd be most interested in. I'm 30+ years from retirement, so that number would be VERY interesting to me.
