To Kindle A Fire
To Kindle A Fire is a Viking story set in the late 8th century when King Godfred united Denmark. It is Vikings against The Holy Roman Empire as Charles-the-Great was becoming its emperor. It is a character-driven interpretation of that period. The Vikings had a democratic council that ruled their land and ...More
they traded with the known world, and sent envoys to all areas, but they also sent mercenaries and criminals to other lands just as Charles-the-Great sent priests abroad to spread God’s word, and sent his armies to support the church.
Rolf Trysson is a character out of exile. Rolf, a Dane envoy to the Court of Charlemagne, was befriended by the scholarly monk Alcuin. Rolf is King Godfred’s first cousin. Audfrey, Hakon and Sonja are Rolf’s family. Ari Rurik is Sonja’s fiancé.
Rolf and Audfrey endure hardship of war, exile, and captivity. They live in a world of Saxon, Frank, and English. Their lives help to kindle a fire that eventually consumes the thorns of pagan gods.
Sonja and Ari overcome separation, danger, and the lure of various romantic affairs. Ari’s pursuit of Sonja parallels Rolf’s journey until they are reunited.
Hakon, teller of the story, is a frail youth hated by Captain Ragnar, a Viking Warrior. Hakon eventually rises to the occasion in Ragnar’s eyes by defending Sonja in an honor battle, a fight Hakon cannot win. Because of Hakon’s bravery, Ragnar changes his attitude about his young nephew and in the end develops a fondness for Hakon.
Ragnar is a Sea King and brother to King Godfred. Ragnar is responsible for raids on England. These raids, together with Charlemagne’s expulsion of Danes from Francia, are the fuel used To Kindle A Fire that consumes a pagan empire.
