  • Dividend Stock Analysis: Is It Time To Buy ConocoPhillips? [View article]
I think you are all being a bit hard on D4L. You are all probably COP shareholders and certainly have right to disagree with his analysis but he rates every stock with same metrics and whether you like his stats for rating is certainly a personal judgment call but he has 40,000 + followers that do and as far as commenting on stocks he would buy today...he lists every stock he buys on date he buys it, if you know where to look. He is one of most transparent contributors around.
I might add he owns COP himself but expect he bought it at much lower price than todays price.

  • The Swensen 6 Portfolio: How To Reduce Risk And Trounce The Market [View article]
Seven years might not be a lot, but key point is it includes 2007 and 2008.
I'm used to seeing 99.9% of "prophets" using a starting point of their return of 2009...which of course had no where to go but up. Notice how many, including some notable authors who use 2009 as starting point on graphs, charts and stats.
All that use this as reference point are merely aberrations.

  • An Investor's Response To 'The President Wants You To Get Rich On Obamacare' [View article]
"If you think the insurers will somehow get the short end, you're mistaken"

How about a little common sense on issue...if ins co love it so much why are many pulling out of market place????

I've been Ins broker for 30 years and only 2 words you need to know that will define outcome of this fiasco "adverse selection"

Purpose was to get more healthy individuals into the equation and I'm seeing exactly the opposite. Only people we are enrolling are those eligible for subsidies/expanded Medicaid and unhealthy people. The healthy middle class are screaming --Why do I have to change plans and pay more for less coverage!

  • Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr defend their plan for the city's bankruptcy, reiterating their opposition to a bailout and maintaining that general obligation bondholders will get no new deal. Meanwhile, the muni bond market's self-regulator says the treatment of GO bonds risks changing how investors view what has long been considered the safest class of municipal debt. [View news story]
The worse part is we appear to be taking Detroit's playbook on a national level....

What is mindboggling to me is how the methods they use to calculate can be over 50% off (adjustment last month)

..Or has their "new method" of calculating jobs being implemented now?

    Per your comment..

"Insurance is meant for protection, not savings. It is also meant for scamming the tax man, especially with respect to estate taxes."

I have been an insurance broker for 30 years...and probably a minority in my industry.... but agree with you 100%

Let me give you hint...what your looking at in the future is under 30 hours/part time jobs.

  • "Asian-Americans are the highest-income, best-educated and fastest-growing racial group in the United States," the Pew Research Center wrote in recent massive study. The WSJ discusses the rise of Asian-Americans in a weekend essay, saying that they "have become the immigrant group that most embodies the American promise of success driven by will and resolve." [View news story]

  • Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker holds a narrow lead over Democrat challenger Tom Barrett in today's recall vote, which follows Walker's passing of legislation that stripped public employee unions of collective bargaining rights. A win for Walker could give encouragement to other states that want to do the same thing in order to rein in budgets.

You have to wonder who could be against .. increasing jobs, cutting deficits, cutting property tax etc but we'll see it again on federal scale in November.

Times certainly have changed.. from land of opportunity to excel by ones own merits...to land of gov and union dependency.

Is simply amazing how polical views will effect the ability of common sense/reasoning.

    November 3, 2006:

"The President [George W. Bush] has the worst jobs record since the Great Depression, and the economy is slowing due to the housing slump. The budget and trade deficits as well as public debt levels have all climbed to record levels," Pelosi said.

The unemployment rate back in November 2006? 4.4 percent, “the lowest it had been in more than five years.”

...and now..We got the same folks who were rationalizing Pelosi/Dems in 06...now trying to convince us we are firing on all cylinders.

Next they be writing articles on how to avoid emotions in investing. :)

  • How Can You Sleep At Night Holding Seadrill? [View article]
If "any" one stock keeps anyone from sleeping it's not the stocks fault.
it's a non diversification issue. I can see market dropping 40% and creating anxiety for some but if one stock does.. the lesson learned from putting one self in that position may be a worth while lesson for future.
