  • Intel Is Late, But It Didn't Miss Mobile [View article]

    what is a OSAT ?

And if the royalty is a % of the smartphone price, is it correct to assume that it is the compagny that make the smartphone that will pay it ?

    Qualcomm always wins.
This means that if Intel ever wants to past Qualcomm in the LTE profits, they need to convince the industry to switch asap to 5G or the next thinght.

mjwrona, you will need to wait to see if Altera goes with Intel on 10nm, if not, rumors are true, if they do design on Intel's 10nm then rumor are bogus. It's a waiting game :)

  • Intel: Understanding Intel [View article]
I think that the difference between the 90% utilization rate that Intel provided in the last earning call and the numbers that Russ calculate is due to certain Fab not being online yet. ex: Fab42 was suppose to be operational in 2013 and its not. Intel doesn't count it in there % of utilization because it is not fully equipped yet thus not 'idle'. Hope this helps.

  • Intel Really Doesn't Need An Apple Foundry Deal [View article]
Just a note, Fab42 is not fully equipped and 'online' and does not count in the utilization ratio that Intel provided (80%). It does leave room for foundry to grow AND have room for Intel's LTE solution in house in the 2015-2016 time frame.

Why 'spit' on extra money even if its lower that corporate average ? 3 billion is 10% extra gross profit, it is significant ! Apple will not switch to x86 anytime soon, so that money can only be 'won' by a foundry deal.

  • The Problem With Intel Is Intel... And Microsoft [View article]
Great article Russ, it is a vicious cercle, people delayed buying because Haswell will be better creating a build up in IVB inventory. Then Intel delayed or slowed the availabity of Haswell to clear up those inventory. Now we see the last effect of that :the 14nm version of Haswell is delayed 3 month because of apparent 'yield issue'.

  • Intel And Apple: An Interesting Tidbit [View article]
@Matt, if Intel did get the fab work for the A7, it would reflect a lot more in the Q4 guidance, iPhone only ship on the 20 th of September, so that's a few weeks worth of processor to be sold in Q3. In the past, it was around 5 mil phone sold for the first week, so consider 10-15 mil @30$/ chip, that is 300-450 mil for Q3, it does 'move the needle' but can easily have been off-set by a low guidance ( the CEO's first guidance) or a diminishing PC sales.
