  • Sorry, Your Dividends Are Not Coming Home Any Time Soon [View article]
Corporate taxes are just passed along to the consumer or borne by the employees in the form of lower wages.

  • How Much Do You Want To Bet On That Dividend? [View article]
    Greg,

Those "locked in losses" in your options trade were cute.

Fact is, if you just bought the stock today at 195.25, and that's where it closes, tomorrow it would be worth 193.50 and you'd have the 1.50 in your pocket. No loss if you have a commission-free account.

Writing negative articles about dividends on SA certainly makes you wealthier. Here's my one cent, Greg. Don't spend it all in one place.

    djohnson,

I'm not a big chartist, but use it to find good entry points. I sold MCD on the way up and tend to agree, it could easily retrace to the mid 70's. I'd start getting interested in reentering if it held at that level.

  • Grand Bargain: Are Fiscal Spending Cuts And Revenue Increases Both Needed? Part 1 [View article]
    Greenriver,

The wealthy who pour billions into influencing government aren't just conservatives. To assume so is rather naive.

Special interests? Now that's a loaded term. Everyone is a special interest. Everybody wants something.

  • The Unbridled Truth About Dividend Contribution To Shareholder Profitability [View article]
    Chowder,

I supect a lot of total returners and traders like Greg also bought Enron in its heyday... dividends weren't a major consideration in the late go-go 1990's when double-digit gains in short time-frames were possible. I personally never owned it.

Enron collapsed because of fraud, I don't know why the fact that it paid a dividend should make the possibility of fraud more likely than let's say any other stock, but perhaps Greg can enlighten us.

  • The Real False God Of Dividends [View article]
    KSA,

One of my good friends still uses XP on an ancient, underpowered computer. He's completely computer-illiterate and I have to bail him out frequently.

I'd probably still be using my Dell, but it didn't have enough RAM to run stuff efficiently, plus the hard drive made an awful clatter the last few years... I saved my files to a flash drive frequently of course.

But yes, let's return to investing!!

"I will refrain and only throw out a M-80 firecracker. " "Frankly, from an accounting standpoint, retained earnings mean relatively nothing! Cash flow is king."

Hah, that's not an M-80, that's a pound of C-4. I also would like to hear more about this from corporate accountants as well.

My own view of retained earnings is that they're worth more in MY pocket than sitting on some company's books. And I'm sure my friend Briar will surely disagree on this one.

And cashflow is indeed king, both for businesses and for investors like me.

    Varan,

    It's even simpler.

Your blanket statements are the problem.

And when you throw stones, don't act surprised when they get tossed back at you.

    DVK,

No question, some of the DGI crowd are thin-skinned, just as some of the goldbug crowd, some of the AAPL crowd, some of the boglehead crowd, some of the MPT crowd, some of the total return crowd, etc etc etc are thin-skinned when challenged by real or imagined arguments.

I came upon this congenial crowd purely by chance. My emphasis on cashflow investing was developed years ago and independently of any "groupthink". I do what any good investor does and periodically reconsider how best to accomplish my goals, which in my case was an early, secure retirement.

I understand all the arguments on both sides of dividends, but the only argument which matters is what's best for my (or your) individual situation. This is the part of the equation most often missed by those touting some other investment method as being "superior".

    DVK,

Or you can hire an MPT-specializing RIA who will lovingly hand-pick a basket of those ETFs for you, and all at the bargain price of another 1+ percent fee... hehe.

    KSA,

APPL always was the niche player. I don't see that changing until they adopt a more competitive pricing strategy....

As for Vista, well, despite all the criticisms such as it's enormous size and memory hoggishness, I've had it for five years and it's worked perfectly fine for all the things I do on a computer.

BTW, My previous operating system was Windows 98 on a Dell that I used faithfully for nine years ... MSFT and hardware manufacturers don't make a lot of money off me.

    Mom,

Didn't the IRS already hire a passel of agents to track down those scoundrels who attempt to evade buying healthcare insurance?
