I love my dividends. They enabled me to retire early, to pay my bills, and to reinvest what's left, thus increasing my income with more and more dividends.
I buy stocks because I want to participate in the business and expect to be rewarded for that. Some people however like to work for free, and if so, there are thousands of stocks to choose from which don't pay dividends.
But, I'm not against ALL buybacks. When a stock is trading below book, a buyback makes good sense.

or run legal ponzi schemes like social security.
or use wonky accounting principles which would result in jail terms for anyone in the private sector.
I call it governmental privilege.

And no, not all buybacks result in retired shares. Often they don't even reduce the float. I've read studies that show 2/3 of all buybacks are a bad deal for the shareholders. Companies tend to buy at market tops, and that's not a good way to enhance book value.
