  • Google's Glass Ceiling Is Upward Of Its $1000 Target Price [View article]
just because google and apple are both tech giants doesn't make them the same kind of company. google doesn't rely on new product releases every year like apple does -- all it has to do is maintain its cash cow search business, which has consistently been market leader, despite efforts from bing and yahoo. in the meantime, it can use that cash thrown off from search to fund "moonshots" like google glass. not everything will be a commercial hit, but eventually something will stick and it'll be huge for their stock. they're like a venture capital firm that generates its own capital to invest with. long $goog.

i don't think they're losing money in the sense that they're heading down the road of insolvency. they took a big hit on an equity investment of $155 million, which pushed their net income into the red. adjusting out that write-down (a nonrecurring event that is also non-operating), they would've made $117M in net income. still god awful margins, but definitely not losing money. on top of that, AMZN has $8B in cash and generates an average of $2-$3 billion in free cash flow each year (this past year, it was down to $400 million because they spent nearly $4B on CapEx investment). working capital is about $2.3B. i'm short AMZN in the short-term, but i certainly don't think it's a stock that can be ridden to zero.

  • "Apple absolutely has to make an iPhone with a bigger screen," iPhone 5 owner Henry Blodget declares. While Apple (AAPL +0.1%) insists on using relatively small display sizes to guarantee effective one-handed iPhone use, devices such as Samsung's Galaxy S III (4.8" display) make the iPhone 5 look "puny and sad in comparison."  The iPhone 5's display size doesn't seem to be affecting its U.S. position much, as Strategy Analytics' numbers demonstrate, but international markets appear to be a different story. [View news story]
is that a phablet in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

unless you're a man with a satchel, you have limited space to store things when you go out. wallet, keys, smartphone. your phone shouldn't be 1/4 the size of your thigh. if i wanted to watch a movie, i'd stay at home and watch it on my flatscreen 32'' HDTV, not some cumbersome 7'' phone.

hey bill, thanks for the read.

quick question on the tax rate. AMZN's effective tax rate was 57.6% in Q4 2012 and you reasoned it was likely because more heavily taxed N.American operating profit constituted a higher proportion of total op. profit in Q4 2012 vs. Q4 2011. but if the corporate tax rate in the US is ~35-40% and taxes are charged as a % of EBT (so you won't be paying a higher tax than you've earned in EBT), wouldn't you expect AMZN's effective tax rate to be a blend of their NA and international operations? ie: the tax rate should be a touch below than that range, not 15%+ above it (58%). am i missing something here?
