  • Algerian troops have stormed the gas plant in the Sahara desert that had been taken over by Islamist terrorists, killing all the militants. However, while 792 hostages survived, 23 were killed during the four-day siege. The terrorists' capturing of the facility, which is operated by Statoil (STO), BP and Algeria's state oil company, highlights the vulnerability of the operations of multinational energy firms in the Sahara. [View news story]

  • Maybe what's got Wal-Mart (WMT) and Consumer Staples (XLP) so down in the dumps relative to the general market over the last month is the payroll tax hike allowed by the fiscal cliff deal. A FRBNY study finds workers spent 28-43% of 2011's payroll tax cut - that's money now going to D.C. instead of retailers. "We continue to be baffled that politicians on both sides agreed ... this was a good idea," writes Cardiff Garcia. [View news story]

  • U.S. auto sales wrapup: After all is said and done automakers see 2012 end with close to 14.5M vehicles sold in the U.S., up 13% from 2011. A strong December for Ford, GM, and Chrysler capped off the year, while Japanese automakers improved sales dramatically from last year's earthquake-ravaged mark but fell short of the estimates of analysts. South Korean automakers Kia and Hyundai felt the sales sting from a flap over inflated fuel rating claims, while in the luxury market BMW edged out Audi and Mercedes. On tap: Can the industry sell 15M cars in 2013? [View news story]

  • Heard on General Motors' (GM -0.9%) November sales call: 1) Trucks are a huge focus. Execs concede something will have to give with inventory elevated and competition intense. 2) The effect of replacement sales due to Hurricane Sandy damage benefited rivals more than GM due to their higher exposure in the Northeast. The skewed sales totals should see a leveling out in the near future. 3) The automaker sees November sales working out to a SAAR pace of 15.3M-15.5M vehicles, but defers on projecting 2013 numbers until the fiscal cliff is worked out in some form. • The 'fiscal cliff' may be a bigger threat than you think, according to BofA Merrill Lynch. The looming tax increases and spending cuts could lop off as much as 1% from growth next year, and may send the economy into a deeper recession than many have predicted. Meanwhile, investors appear to remain oblivious. In a recent survey of fund managers, BofA found the market bias is for the "risk-on" trade — with the market rising higher — in spite of the political dangers looming. [View news story]
