  • Hopping aboard a train that left the station ages ago - Goldman ups its forecast for the aussie, expecting it to trade around $1.080 for the next year. The previous forecast had the currency between $0.9700 and $1.030. Trading at $0.9900 7 weeks ago, the aussie has just completed a straight line 900 pip move to $1.080. Very helpful call. • Alarmed by talk of increased Western sanctions that could reduce or even halt its oil exports, Iran warns crude oil prices could surge to at least $250/barrel. The warning is part of Iran’s attempt to intimidate its adversaries, and it could be working: European fears grow that new sanctions would hurt themselves more than they would hurt Iran. Crude prices finished with only slight gains.  [View news story]

I agree with Tim the AUD is way to high. I live in OZ and can tell you Tim he is spot on with his assessment everyone seems to be fooled by the mining sector thinking everything is going gang busters here, well its not all other sectors are struggling big time the cost of living is starting to get out of control etc and people are not spending as they are afraid of the current Gov in place.

  • Has Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao given risk markets a big green light? Writing in the FT, he says China's battle against inflation has worked, with price levels expected to "drop steadily" from here. A key market worry - tight money and a slowdown in China - may have just been lifted. Asian markets and commodities are up sharply. Non-paywall summary here.  [View news story]

  • Not participating in today's "risk on" rally is the Australian dollar, which falls 1% in the wake of a report showing export volumes plummeting 8.7% in Q1. Another report shows house prices continue to fall, with higher-end property particularly hard hit. Aussie buys $1.0659.  [View news story]
Yep OZ will be trouble when the mining game slows down as it will in the next 18 months or so and then when the housing bubble comes into play it will not be pretty everyone thinks what happen in Europe /UK & the USA in housing will not happen here for some unknown reason.
