    Excellent article. It bears mentioning that the primary problem with gacha systems and fluff is not the gambling mechanic itself (though it's still an issue), but rather that the initial financial success of the system hurts the game(s) in the long run.

    When new shinies are put into the game behind gambling mechanics, people jump all over them at first. However, the success of these items pushes the developers to spend their time creating more new shinies instead of content (because of the difference in RoI, as was alluded to in the article). The old (subscription) business model relied on player retention to make money. The new free-to-play model is increasingly becoming a system where the business goal of a game is to strip-mine a new player's wallet before they hit the end of the game's meager content and quit playing.
