  • McCafe to storm North American grocery stores [View news story]
McD's coffee is awful, gas station quality. It may be cheap but I never buy it with the breakfast anymore.

  • Tesla must stop selling cars without a dealer, New Jersey agency rules [View news story]
Aren't they doing this in AZ, OH, MN, TX as well? Government corruption and cronyism at its best and certainly not limited to one political party.

  • J.C. Penney brings back sales commissions [View news story]
Do you really have a lot of questions or need help picking out clothes? Pushy sales people are a reason I would avoid the stores even more.

  • Funded pensions move back out of stocks [View news story]
So have the pension plans also lowered their expected return rate as well? Seems they all got in trouble at one point for placing high expected returns on their portfolios due to over exuberant stock expectations. Now they think they can keep up the funding by shifting into low return (or even negative return if rates move up quickly) fixed income?

  • Herbalife slips after bucking Thursday's weak tape [View news story]
Greenberg tends to wait until someone else raises a stink about a company or the company admits to accounting issues then he jumps all over it and acts like he has uncovered something and then never lets it go. By the time he starts harping about something the train has already left the station.

What is so unusual about a drive thru? The DNKN down the street from my house has had a drive thru since they built it 2 years ago.

  • Noodles & Co - Great Food, Great Stock? [View article]
The s-1 indicated NDLS plans to use approximately $60MM of the IPO proceeds to pay down debt. Any thoughts to the impact on EBITDA and subsequent EBITDA margin gains as the interest expense declines?

Still probably looks expensive, especially after the latest surge, but may allow a bit better growth numbers.

  • Apache (APA +1%) is upgraded to Buy from Hold with a $105 target price (from $90) at Deutsche Bank, which sees the incentive and opportunity for significant change via restructuring. Growth particularly through acquisition has been central to the APA business model for decades, and the firm sees the shift to divest an acknowledgement of the limits of growth for a ~800M boe/day producer. [View news story]
Of course at any moment Egypt could self destruct and there goes 1/3rd of the cash flow.

  • Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but a surprising 44% of consumers responding to a survey on the impact of an online sales tax say they will buy less items online if the legislation is passed into law. The number rises to 75% for the 18-year to 25-year old demographic (ZUMZ, ANF, URBN, ARO, BKE, VRA). Though seemingly a bad development for Amazon (AMZN -0.6%) and eBay (EBAY), many retail analysts thinks those shopping habits are pretty hard to break. [View news story]
Those listed teen retailers have a physical presence in most states and certainly all with any population so don't they already collect sales tax for most of their online sales?

  • CNN says it will launch a three-hour morning show aiming to rattle the stranglehold NBC's Today show and ABC's Good Morning America have on the time slot. New CNN boss Jeff Zucker thinks an early start for the show and fresh talent will help it capture high ratings and more advertising dollars for parent Time Warner (TWX). [View news story]
How about someone tries launching a morning show with true news content and not just skimming the headlines and then delving into fluff pieces and celebrity gossip?

  • JPMorgan (JPM) is reportedly set to be pinned by regulators for failing to conduct adequate due diligence and report suspicious activity in its dealings as Bernie Madoff's main bank for two decades. The OCC will likely this year issue a cease-and-desist order to have the bank correct failings in its anti-money laundering practices. [View news story]
My thoughts exactly Bret. JPM was supposed to know something was up but the SEC? Nah, they couldn't be expected to find anything during their visits, inspections, and oversight despite smart people handing them the blueprint of what to look for. Typical government ineffectiveness.

  • Gold doesn't have many friends left, but Julian Jessop, head of commodities research at Capital Economics, still sees "plenty of upside" with gold possibly hitting $2,000/oz. Worries about the Fed curbing its bond-buying efforts earlier than expected as well as Cyprus being the first eurozone country forced to sell its gold reserves are both overblown, he says. [View news story]
since Capital Econ has been calling for the end of the world since 2009 I'll take any predictions with a grain of salt. Perma bears are no better than perma bulls

  • It's not enough nearly every prominent bear has decamped to the bullish ranks, but so-called "black swan" funds - set up to profit from market panics - have fallen out of favor. "If the world's central banks have decided they are going to do whatever to support the economy, then you are not going to have crazy volatility," says Nicolas Rousselet in the kind of quote the speaker will likely regret saying at some point. [View news story]
A black swan event is supposed to be a rare event. Why on earth would anyone invest in a fund geared toward A. predicting a black swan event, B. only profiting from black swan events. Nothing like betting on the slim chance someone predicts the black swan event and/or that another black swan or rare event even happens.

  • The battle over energy drinks rages on while in the background the FDA carries on a probe on the industry. Though companies such as Monster Beverage (MNST) and 5-Hour Energy claim concerns over safety are unfounded, a new focus on the marketing message covering the benefits of energy drinks is cropping up. In a nutshell, critics warn the drinks offer little to consumers but extra sugar and caffeine. [View news story]

Does Captain Morgan really put a little Captain in you? Think of all the marketing statements the government needs to save us from.
