  • A quiet day in EU bond markets is shattered after German European Minister Hoyer, noting deficit cutting may not be enough, says Germany would back voluntary Greek restructuring, i.e. default. Greek 10 year yields shoot 55 basis points higher to 13.82%. The euro drops 40 pips to $1.4416.  [View news story]
In Greece case it was some 1-1.5 year, now it will go much faster.

I think they also lose old Spotfire users, new small players can serve them better and customers simply do realize that.

  • Apple (AAPL) is reportedly taking on the fast-coming Android (GOOG) threat by planning smaller, cheaper iPhones - and ones that would work on multiple wireless networks. Also caught up in the competitive crossfire would be a newly-Microsofted (MSFT) Nokia (NOK -13.5%).  [View news story]
    Bye bye AAPL margins.

  • Whitney Tilson confirms that he's giving up on his Netflix (NFLX) short position, citing a strong quarter that weakened his investment thesis, a survey that showed high customer satisfaction with Netflix's streaming service, and Reed Hastings' revealing letter which led Tilson to question his assumptions. Tilson had hinted at such a change of heart in a recent letter to investors.  [View news story]

  • Is Microsoft a Modern Day Titanic? [View article]
I think that MSFT did not tell their last word yet. 90% all computers today are powered by Windows and this is not going to change anytime soon.

MSFT is hitting the nail with the Kinect sensor. Sold more than 2.5M units and counting. At some markets the new XBOX+Kinect bundles are sold off and unavailable. If they are not stupid, they will soon publish drivers for Windows so then develpers can deploy its amazing features in business applications and not games only. Considering the situation with trends today, I guess that "touch" devices are a normal yet and the new vision and mantra is Kinect and non-touch gesture control and MSFT is clearly leading here.

  • Boeing (BA) may come to regret its recent penchant for outsourcing its supply chain, as the Chinese roll out a new airliner some already call a "737-killer" and may be 20% less expensive to build than the 737. In recent years, Boeing has ramped up its outsourcing to China and elsewhere and allowed the transfer of an unprecedented level of know-how.  [View news story]
Hardly paid lessons. The same situation is with outsourcing a software.

  • The U.S. Should Limit the Global Free Trade System [View article]
    Nice post. Thanks.

The "Globalization" in its beginnings opened new markets, then soon offered new factories and helped US to cut costs, suddenly caused new competitors came into the scene.

While US workers will hardly be competitive to those of China or India, our scientists, developers and designers are still a top class. We must focus on new technologies and create a new economy based on this. Then we must be more selective in who will be invited into the club.

  • It was clear at the Jackson Hole meeting that the central bankers don't know what to do now with interest rates near zero, and there are big differences about what to do when things return to "normal," Steve Liesman writes. "It is hard to remember a time when central bankers were both so divided and so uncertain."  [View news story]
