If I read Turk's explanation correctly a member can only transfer gold to or receive gold from another member. that's very limiting to the user of gold to pay a bill unless millions of accounts exist. How many accounts are there now?
As to CEF, it sells sat a premium most of the time.When it's zero or negative BUY and then get a booster gain when it goes positive again.

How do we know for sure that IAU, SLV, GLD, CEF and other precious metal ETFs are in possession of actual metal rather than someone elses promissory paper? There is a great opportunity to just hold paper and use our invesrted money in some other risky scheme.

Ah, but do GLD and IAU (and SLV) have actual metal in their possession or just some paper promising them that amounts of metal have been assigned to them? Or, who at the ETF counts the physical metal to assure the investors really have direct ownership and acess rather than some one elses promise that it exists? Seems like we may be buying paper and not physical metal -would make existing above ground supply look larger than reality.

Ah yes, gas from shale depletes quickly. But not so for coal bed methane. It is present at many times greater amounts disolved in the coal, releases slower and actually increases its release rate as the well ages.
