  • The EPA drops plans to have outside experts review its theory that fracking may have played a role in groundwater pollution in Wyoming, opting to allow state officials to lead further investigations. Industry officials praise the change as confirmation of their view that the science the EPA was using wasn't sound. The new research will be partially funded by a grant from Encana (ECA), which owns the state's Pavillion gas field.  [View news story]
Tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires would undoubtedly help the investigation too.

  • The passing of longtime Hawaii senator Daniel Inouye could have implications for Matson (MATX -0.6%), according to dealReporter. Efforts to rewrite the Jones Act which requires the use of U.S. ships for cargo passing between U.S. ports are ramping up. Without the considerable clout of Inouye to protect Hawaii's interests, Mattson's cargo business to and from the region could at risk.  [View news story]
The passing of Inyoue? Was he a famous quarterback or something? And what does that have to do with him being a senator?

  • The U.S. wind turbine market could blow away without continuation of a politically charged tax credit, a top official of Danish turbine maker Vestas (VWDRY.PK) tells FT, warning of 75%-95% shrinkage in the U.S. market for wind power if the tax credit for wind power is allowed to expire at the end of the year.  [View news story]
It's hard to believe how much private money is invested in solar and wind given the energy experts' comments above.

  • Bears like to point to the unsustainable level of corporate profits in a slow-GDP economy, but the S&P 500 - trading at just 14.7X earnings vs. a long-run average of 16.6 - may have priced this in, writes Scott Grannis. If the economy stays slow - but avoids recession - stocks should do just okay, but if we get a pickup in growth, look out for far higher prices.  [View news story]

It's believed that Quinn will ultimately support expanding gambling in the state, but with two of his predecessors spending time in prison - he's a tad skittish on such things. • Most recent earthquakes in North Texas happened close to injection wells used to dispose of wastewater from oil and gas drilling in the region, and they're happening more frequently, according to new research. "You can't prove that any one earthquake was caused by an injection well," the top researcher says, "but it's obvious that wells are enhancing the probability that earthquakes will occur."  [View news story]

  • Enbridge (ENB) plans today to replace a section of an oil pipeline in Wisconsin that leaked Friday, though it still does not have a restart date for the artery carrying Canadian crude to the U.S. Although the spill appeared to be relatively small and quickly contained, it comes at a delicate time for Enbridge, whose spills in Alberta and Michigan are branding it with a BP-of-the-Midwest reputation.

  • The corn crop is gone, says Dennis Gartman, and despite already high prices, corn and corn-related shares should be bought on any weakness. Stay away from fertilizer stocks, however tempting as they may be as a proxy to corn. Buying them on the premise that laying more fertilizer will save the crop is just a "silly idea," Gartman quips. Fertilizer may be needed next year, but right now, anybody who's laid some down already wishes they hadn't because the crop is completely destroyed. (video)   [View news story]

  • TARP was nice, writes Andrew Ross Sorkin, but the unsung hero of staunching the post-Lehman bank panic was the government's quick move to raise the FDIC deposit insurance limit to $250K and fully backstop the money-market industry. Unless Europe does something similar, the €100B Spanish bailout is doomed to fail, he says.   [View news story]
