  • SNC Lavalin: A Classic Peter Lynch Turnaround [View article]
This is more than just a "Scandal" this is criminal.

The author's comment "and it's believed that since this is an election year, the Canadian government will forgo that option so as not to dissuade the always important French-Canadian vote."

Even if you believe the above and I don't, the next election must be held by October 19 2015 at the latest according to the election's act.

Does the author believe the legalities will be finished by then?

In October, Card said that the company could be forced to close or sell its operations if it faced criminal charges. A company vice-president later clarified that it would consider all options in deciding what is best for shareholders.

  • SNC Lavalin: A Classic Peter Lynch Turnaround [View article]
    CBC News February 20

Canadian engineering giant SNC-Lavalin is in a fight for its very survival over foreign bribery and fraud charges levelled against the company, according to some analysts.

The RCMP laid fraud and bribery charges yesterday against three divisions of the company for work done in Libya between 2001 and 2011, alleging the subsidiaries paid $47.7 million in bribes and defrauded the people of the dictatorship ("Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya") of $129.8 million.

The company has been facing a string of similar scandals, including a bridge project in Bangladesh, a consultant's work in Mexico and the McGill University mega-hospital project in Montreal.

If convicted, SNC-Lavalin could be banned from bidding on government contracts for 10 years under Ottawa’s so-called integrity framework. The code’s regulations deal with companies convicted of crimes in Canada or abroad and the ban extends to subsidiaries and sister companies of convicted companies.

    10 years not 5 years

New Criminal charges were made in February 2015.

News that Canadian engineering giant SCN-Lavalin is facing new criminal charges caused a stir last week, not least because of the penalties that are on the table. The fraud and corruption charges spring from the company’s dealings in Libya.

And if convicted, in addition to any other penalties handed out, the company could be barred for 10 years from competing for contracts with the Government of Canada—a category of contracts that make up an important element of the company’s income.

You covered a lot of area in a short article. In my opinion we can only expect one interest rate hike this year and if it happens it will be at the end of the year.

With oil prices this low it gets India off to a strong start. I hold shares in the Fairfax India Holding company FIH.U which started trading on January 30. They have 1 billion USD to invest in Indian companies so I'm big on India now.
Canadian Prem Watsa who grew up in India and made money on the financial crisis is the founder.

The Great Prem Watsa raised slightly over a billion dollars to invest in India. As of January 30 it trades on the Toronto Stock exchange. FIH.U
In my opinion India will outperform China long term simply because it is a chaotic democracy.

Prime Minister Modi and Jayant Sinha will add focus for the first time.
