  • Dividend Investors: Time To Rethink Verizon And AT&T  [View article]
Reading the link you proved, the bill from Comcast for their service is much higher than the pricing for equivalent services from Verizon Fios. While the article states cable operators can do a faster roll out the big "if" is whether the cable operators can get their pricing competitive.

  • These 26 Dividend Aristocrats Won't Let You Sleep Well At Night  [View article]
A good article for investors to think about. Survivor bias is a problem for any list or index. Over the last 20 years a number of companies have been deleted from the DJI, S&P 500 due to mergers, change in domicile, bankruptcy, etc.
There are issues with ETFs that should also be noted such as tracking error and if the manager is using a hybrid or customized index.
When investing there are no magic formulas an individual must due their own homework.

  • Fiscal Policy Has Failed The U.S. Economy  [View article]
A major drag on growth is the lack of available credit to medium and small businesses in the US and Europe. This is due the adoption of the Basel III accords by bank regulators in the US and Europe which sets loan risk tiers by type of creditor which is then used to set loan reserve requirements. Loans to small business are classified as highly risky by the nature of the borrower and not their payment history. This is compounded by the requirements for banks to increase their reserves.

I have seen this in working with local banks where loans are being reclassified by the FDIC reviewers to high risk categories based on the size and nature of local businesses resulting in increased reserve requirements and not the company's ability to repay the loan.

    Rose,

I agree both Brad and Dane provide valuable and insightful articles. The question in the articles is not who is right or wrong but how does an individual wish to management their portfolio and their risk tolerance.

To expand on rip's comment, any debt restructuring will trigger tax issues for LINE unit holders whether they are held in an IRA or taxable account. The 2015 K-1 will give current unit holders a taste of what could come in 2016.

When retiring it is best to own your home and preferably debt free. Housing is the largest necessary expense in retirement followed by food and medical. All the other expenditures are just life style and can be reduced or eliminated.

Another risk to consider is the impact of the completion of the Panama Canal expansion on intermodal volumes. Shippers will also be evaluating East and Gulf Coast ports against the congested and strike prone West Coast ports served by UP.

Also, one will need to consider the impact of the BNSF purchase by Berkshire Hathaway on the pricing structure in this duopoly.

I would ask if the Fed is giving into pressure from money managers who have hedging positions for a rate hike. Doing so in December will make their results look better for the year.

  • Social Security And Portfolio Withdrawals: It's Complicated  [View article]
The 8% cited is an an actuarial table factor used by SSA to have the base monthly benefits paid to an individual equal the same total at an assumed life expectancy between 80 and 82. If you build a table using your annual SSA benefit report of estimated monthly benefits for each different retirement age (63 to 70) you will find the age where the crossover for yourself will occur.

For someone who is able to meet annual living expenses without the need to touch their portfolio principle it is easy to make the decision to defer till 70. It becomes much more complicated if by delaying you have to liquidate a portion of your portfolio principle which is a loss of the related earnings stream going forward. The assumptions to be considered are numerous - market rate of return, inflation rate, life expectancy, income tax rates, discount rate to value future benefits etc.
