  • Microsoft Reports Strong Quarter Driven By Entertainment And Windows [View article]
Business purchases of new hardware have been seriously slowed by the economic environment. I am typing this on a system with windows XP at a major Houston hospital.
I also would not be surprised to see a rapid acceptance of the Microsoft surface pro in business as well .
All this will continue to expand Microsoft.
    Next, cloud storage and software.
I am in the army reserves, and we are seeing a shift from our old e-mail system to outlook enterprise. It's security features are essential. The hospital I work with has also begun using it. It is just plain better for managing email than google, and more secure.
Add to that the expansion in entertainment (xbox 720) and I see a whole lot of upside. So let this stock that is one of the few large caps that fit Ben Graham's value rules stay cheap for a little while longer so I can buy up more please.

  • The Treasury sells $13B in reopened 30-year bonds at 3.07% - the first time since May that the auction's yields have topped 3%. Bid-to-cover ratio of 2.77, vs. a recent average of 2.61; indirect bidders take 37.8%. Direct bidders take 16.7%. [View news story]
I am a private investor. I have worked as a physician for over 20 years. I serve in the Army reserves and have been to the sandpit a couple of times. I have owned 2 of businesses that prospered and then sold at a profit. I am a student of history, and marvel at the folly of those who have never had the personal responsibility of employees, debt, or overhead making decisions for our country.
I agree that inflation is higher than the CPI predicts. The selling of more bonds and deflating the dollar is having it's effect on that. Can our "friends" selling oil continue to stand for their product to be sold in dollars?
Bond yields are way, way to low, and we will get back to interest rates seen in the late 70's before too long. A powerful weapon for foreign governments to own for sure. Mr.Bernanke will not be able to hold off the dogs for to much longer, and interest rates will rise. Banks sitting on cheap money will do well. It does not appear that our current government is caring about the economy at the moment. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens and making illegal immigrants voting citizens are apparently the most important considerations at the moment.
The republicans will not be able to make headway with any spending cuts before going along with the president on raising the debt limit. As they often say on CNBC, "they will just kick the can down the road".

  • Apple (AAPL) is reportedly dumping Intel (INTC) chips in favor of ARM-based (ARMH) chips for its laptops and possibly its desktops, SemiAccurate's Charlie Demerjian writes. Apple's alleged move to ARM processors is expected to take place "as soon as possible," likely when 64-bit variations are available by late 2012 or early 2013. ARMH +5.1%, INTC -0.7%, AAPL +0.9% premarket.  [View news story]
Intel makes the best product and has the reputation to stand by it. I am 48 and will not buy anymore inferior machines with AMD chips in them. I also believe mac will still want their machines to be the elite albeit more expensive machines. So why again go to a cheaper processor? My company has 22 apple computers, and 45 PC's . Now intel also has the technology design for the future being touted. Mac won't stop using intel chips altogether.
    Maybe a discount line....

I have to wonder if ZION would ever sell out given the origins of the business. A merger or acquisition would seem to be good for them.

  • Stock Buybacks: In Style at the Wrong Time [View article]
?? So you want to have a company use it's cash to buy back a stock when it is high? Have you ever heard of Ben Graham? Inefficient use of corporate cash is a big no no. Netflix will fall, and then everyone will look at their corporate rah rah and start lopping off heads.

  • Notable earnings before Monday's open: GYMB, LOW  [View news story]
Not surprised at all at the upside on Lowes today. This is a stock that has little downside. Shares are trading $13 below fair value. Look for it to pop back up to $28. Cost cutting measures to turn a profit however won't work forever, so expect aggressive advertising from them to improve sales.

  • Inside the New Barclays VEQTOR ETN [View article]
What percent of a portfolilo should be in an index fund such as this? Given that it is an index fund, I was considering 25%-35%. Too risky? It seems like a very safe consideration.
