"For instance, if many people sold their GLD ETF shares, that would suddenly dump a lot of gold onto the market.'
No. That leased gold would then only show up on the books once . . . in the governments vault rather than showing up twice once on paper in an ETF and again in the governments vault.
Avery, you have been on my "follow" list for a long time. Your articles are always well thought out. I am curious what you think about what Ted Butler has been saying about JP Morgan's massive short position on silver.

"we think the rules have changed and that it will be very different this time "
When I hear someone say the rules have changed a red flag goes up. I am not saying this isn't true but often times when someone tells me "this time it is different" the market is getting ready to prove them wrong.
I agree. You need to re-crunch those numbers Mark.

"Use your imagination to come up with a storage solution. Gold is very compact, and does not corrode." Harold, are you advocating storing gold in the toilet tank?

"Other funds to make the top ten on inflows were . . . three leveraged funds: the ProShares Ultra S&P 500 (SSO), ProShares Ultra DJ Financials (UYG) and the Direxion Financials Bull 3x (FAS). "
Wow. Those folks are regretting that decision . . . for now at least.
China to Ask for U.S. Treasury Guarantees [View article]
I agree with everything you said except for this: "While China may be posturing after suffering $5 billion in losses on its $10.5 billion investments in Blackstone (BX), Morgan Stanley (MS) and TPG." The Chinese think very long term. They may be posturing but I doubt they are concerned with what is probably an inconsequential and temporary $5 billion loss.

Rolex,
Do you just make this stuff up? I know plenty of goldbugs but not a single one of them fits into your catgories.

Paultaut,
" If any kind of LNG transportation occurs, it will be from the US not to the US."
I could be wrong but I don't think the US has any LNG liquifaction terminals for export. Theoritically they could export the current inventory at import terminals but I don't think this has ever been done. Unless an export terminal gets built in Alaska I don't think we will see LNG export from the US for a long time if ever.
