  • A Newbie Active Investor Discusses His Portfolio [View article]
You are right about SAN being a great pick. Monster dividend and room for growth once Europe becomes more stable. It's been hurt by Spain/Euro crisis even though it has a growing client-base in the Americas and has avoided the death kneel that Greek and Spanish banks are feeling right now.

I had an internal debate between picking it and DB for my portfolio. I mainly went with DB because of my affinity to the Germans and my despising of Santander from a customer service point of view after having been through paying off a car with them.

And yet my pick loses 6% and I advance. Ugly.

  • Coinstar's Debt Raise A Problem For Netflix [View article]
I use both but for different reasons. Netflix is my TV replacement and Redbox is my $1 movie theater.

Also, subscribers can be unloyal. One can sign a 1-month contract with NFLX, watch House of Cards, several other series, a couple of Disney movies. And then switch to the competitor to digest it's premium/exclusive content. And so on.

As far as valuation. We have seen this type of runup before with NFLX and not much has changed since. A lot of folks are going to get burned when it drops back down to 100. In the short term, CSTR is the better pick.

  • Apple Launching A Low Priced iPhone Would Be The Ultimate Sell Signal [View article]
If a head of household will purchase will purchase a Galaxy s3 alongside a few cheaper android phones for their kids, then why wouldn't they an apple user also purchase an iPhone 5 and a couple of iPhone (nanos) for their kids as well? Every statistic shows brand loyalty when it comes to Apple. I just don't see that dissipating with a release of a new phone. I also don't see iPhone 4s/5 users downgrading to a cheaper phone.

Not the beginning of the end. It's just a new beginning.

  • Microsoft Positioned For Unrivaled Enterprise Ecosystem [View article]
rj: That is a quite consumer ecosystem.

In your opinion, how easy would it be for the average person to setup a fully MSFT consumer ecosystem like you did? Subjectively from my viewpoint, it's hard for me to see someone outside of an IT professional building that type of unified infrastructure for their home. And I honestly don't know as much about windows phones or tablets (outside of surface).

The most hurting part of this approach is the weakness in the phones. I can't see too many corporate environments steering quickly away from iPhones and Android just as they have adopted them. Otherwise, this will be a huge year for Microsoft. They have put in place (most of) the parts. Surface/Windows8/SkyDr... The big question is whether everything is going to work/look exactly as it should. If it does, it will catalyze Microsoft's dominance in the corporate environment. If it flops, it will be no different than the past ten years.

Either way, MSFT should be a solid pick with little downside.

  • Boston Beer: Buy The Beer, Sell The Stock [View article]
Completely agree but that pressure from the big boys, SAB, INBEV and Molson Coors has always been there. SAM has been the alternative to them which has given it it's growth until now. The difference today is that the other national craft beers and local breweries are finding their place at the distribution points right next to SAM products.

The largest enemy to Sam Adams is the growth of craft beer and microbrews. As other microbreweries and America's taste for quality beer evolve, SAM is going to continually have to compete as a tweener, skating the line between quality craft brews and the commercial beer giants.

And if a larger microbrew which was focused on quality (Bells, Rogue) made there way public, I'd be taking a look at em.
