APPL fans, what about saturated smart phone market? What about margin pressure from price competition? Samsung will not go down without a fight by cutting prices.

  • The Apple-Microsoft Comparison Is Valid [View article]
Yes APPL has joined the ranks of MSFT and INTC. Low multiple, high dividend, cash generating value tech stock. Perhaps will be added to DJIA someday too.

I cannot belieive analysts still has $600+ price targets. APPL is a one product company (iphone). Any iphone execution mistakes means it will join the ranks of RIMM, NOK, and Motorola. With Jobs gone, who will be swinging the whip in Cupertino?

  • Apple $395: Time To Give Up And Abandon Ship? [View article]
That may be cause a pop in share prices for a quick trade for couple of weeks. But it does not change long term view of their P/E multiple.

  • Apple $395: Time To Give Up And Abandon Ship? [View article]
I don't see any catalyst for AAPL to command a higher P/E multiple any time soon. They need something new that has not been commoditiezed yet. I love APPL HW. They are best in the industry and I'm willing to pay premium. They will always be a niche player in highest quality HW.

  • A Remarkably Safe Way To Play The Apple Earnings Announcement [View article]
    Dr. Terry,

This trade ended up in a loss due to IV drop of long straddles and stock moving more than $35 (short straddle). April series IV dropped from 34 to 28. June series dropped from 31 to 28.

"Since the options market is supposedly totally efficient, a strategy like this that shows a gain no matter what happens to the stock should not be a possibility." -- The market was efficient after all!

Lesson learned: IV always drops after earnings even for longer dated options which makes them a bad candidate for protection against shorter dated options written.

How about a follow up article?

  • A Remarkably Safe Way To Play The Apple Earnings Announcement [View article]
Thank you for the article. Keep up the good work.

AAPL is down ~6% ($35) after hours so options market nailed we are left with no profit on our short straddle. The bulls were proven wrong this time but we still close our position with some profit from the long straddle, hopefully.

Applying this trade to NFLX would have been great. IV was 220 for Jan 25. Stock moved up ~33% after the earnings announcement.

  • Apple Dumped ARM's Designs In iPhone And iPad, But Nobody Noticed [View article]

Great post! Appreciate your insight and agree with you on technical details/facts.

I think Battlezone is referring to PA Semi not Intrinsity. PA semi team has enough work producing a SoC based on ARM designed cores. They did not have to design a new ARM core from ground up unless there was a good reason for it. My guess is there are both technical and financial reason for Apple creating its own ARM core. It just makes sense.

I can't see how MIPs will ever be a competitive threat to ARM in mobile space. They face the same issue as Intel does against ARM. iTunes and Google play apps don't run natively on anything other than ARM CPUs. Developers write mobile apps for x86 before MIPS.
