  • The ferocity of the recent reversal in the VIX (VXX) - from 20% above its 10-day moving average to 20% below within a month - has occurred just 4 other times going back to 1990, writes Adam Warner. Is it a tell? Unfortunately not likely, says Warner, as no pattern is evident from the previous instances. [View news story]

  • Buying the dip in the VIX (VXX -8.2%) is MKM Partners' Jim Strugger, who says we're still in the midst of a 5.5 year cycle of elevated market volatility which began in 2008. He expects one last "high-magnitude" event in the next few months. [View news story]

Separately, Alcatel says it will demo 12 new cloud service concepts at CES. Among them: energy management apps for utilities that can monitor/adjust home appliance use, and interactive tables for airports and train stations. [View news story]

  • The nearly-always bullish Tom Lee of JPMorgan detects (via) a bit too much company. "Even notable bears have turned bullish on equities in 2013." Not necessarily "ringing the top," it's a reminder for investors to pay attention to the consensus. His personal view remains a higher S&P for the year, but not before a pre-midyear correction. [View news story]

  • The apparent movement towards a deal has the VIX plunging 19%, one of its biggest single-day implosions in years (and that's saying something). The "fear gauge" had made a big move higher since mid-December as traders bet on a D.C. agreement not being reached. Other big moves: August 2011, -27%, May 2010 -30%. VXX -10.1%[View news story]

  • Goldcorp (GG -1.3%) is downgraded to Neutral from Outperform with a reduced price target of $45 (from $58) at Credit Suisse, which sees lower cash flow in 2013 and lower NAV based on revised estimates for Penasquito and PV. The firm continues to see near-term headwinds for GG with a likely capex increase and a reduced production growth profile. [View news story]

  • Molycorp (MCP +5.8%) posts its second straight strong gain, as the picture grows brighter: Large stockpiles of rare earths are finally starting to dwindle, and top competitor Lynas is undergoing regulatory problems with Malaysia's government. How much higher can MCP climb? Oracle's Laurence Balter has a $50 price target, but shares still would be shy of their 2011 summer high near $7. [View news story]

  • Despite the immediate negative reaction to the ouster of Molycorp (MCP) CEO Mark Smith - shares -5.5% premarket - investors may come around to a more positive view. Smith "had lost credibility" with constituents, shareholders, potential investors and analysts, a J.P. Morgan analyst says; "his ability to deal with the financials of an emerging company appeared to overwhelm him at times," says another. [View news story]

  • Among the trading myths revealed in 2012, writes Ryan Detrick is that a "low" VIX (VXX) is bearish. Anyone who thinks the VIX below 20 shows unusual complacency doesn't have charts going back more than 5 years, he says. Another: That low volume is bearish. Dollar-volume is a fairer indicator, and it's higher now than it was during the 2003-07 run. Put another way, if Apple and Google split 10:1, low volume goes away. [View news story]
VXX is a Trap except when a "Krach", like in Summer 2011, with a Surge in VIX, occurs ...

In 2012, XIV was a much better Choise, a bit late unfortunately, what about 2013 : a Spoonful of VXX to gat some Money back, or same Trap as in 2012 ?

  • Alcatel-Lucent (ALU -3.4%) is getting kicked out of France's CAC-40 index in favor of smart card maker Gemalto (GTOFF.PK), effective Dec. 24. Its market cap now just at $2.6B, Alcatel's shares are down over 80% from early-2011 levels and well over 90% from their 2007 highs, as the telecom equipment firm struggles to deal with share losses, soft telecom capex, a heavy debt load, and political roadblocks to restructuring moves. [View news story]
ALU went to a Maximum of 97 Euros back in 2000 (crazy, yes !) during the Internet Bubble and slipped as low as about 0.8 Euros these Days.
The Decision to replace it by GEMALTO as One of the CAC 40 Value comes probably from the french AMF (Equivalent of your SEC in the US) or from some othet Institution : how to keep a Penny Stock like ALU among major Companies like TOTAL or EADS worth 10 to 50 Billions Euros ?
