  • Several Theories To Explain Apple's Nosedive [View article]
It's not so much a lie, though:

    http://bit.ly/VvuSJH

The iPhone really has made up half of Apples value, and phones have followed trends. Apple does have a great OS though, and so long as they keep that up, they'll stay in the running alongside Android for years to come.

And the iPad has really kicked into gear for Apple. I really don't care about their shrinking margins so long as the idea of them as the norm permeates into our culture. So far, so good.

I like your articles, and I think your analysis is fair.

However, now we're looking at 2 out of 4 companies mentioned here totally failing within a year.

  • Finding A True Value For Gold And Silver: Part I [View article]
If gold is truly an insurance, then it's insurance against a crisis.

If a crisis happens, what are the odds you'll be able to get it's value from a bank or your broker? Pretty good, I'll admit - but look at the history of economic and social collapse. They happen - and when they do, your insurance gold better have a physical form in your house.

I'm invested in 1 gold mining company, and I keep a (roughly) equal value worth of physical gold locked up in a safe. And 3% isn't a bad number - I'm just saying that maybe half of that should be physical gold.

  • Finding A True Value For Gold And Silver: Part I [View article]
Well, here we are 9 months later, and gold has been stuck in the mud. Gone up $100, gone down $100, and now about $35 lower than it was when you typed this.

It's naive to assume that any commodity can only go up in value.

  • Algae Fuel For Regular Diesel Prices? Solazyme Makes It Happen [View article]
You have a rule against adding to a losing position? I really have a problem with that type of rule.

Either I believe in a company, or I don't. The companies I believe in are either fairly priced, cheap, or expensive on any given day. If I believe enough to buy, and it gets cheaper, that's a signal that I should consider buying some more.

Buy high, sell low? That's what I'm trying to avoid?

  • What Happened To Biofuel 1.0? [View article]
Thank you for pointing this out.

Solazyme's patents might end up being the most valuable patents in human history, looking back 100 years from now. Their potential is absolutely mind-blowing. But unless you've got a solid background in biology and technology, I'm not sure how easy this is to realize.

Meanwhile, companies that should be trying to squash competitors like Solazyme are offering them sweet-heart joint ventures.

Solazyme will be more profitable than their current market cap within a few years, I expect.

  • Chipotle Gets Einhorned: Why David Einhorn's Thesis Is Flawed [View article]
My 2 cents: I get a totally different experience ordering from Chipotle than from Taco Bell. Chipotle let's me customize my order as it's being made (extra beans!), and the product I get is significantly larger, and better, than Taco Bells by the end.

And yes, I still eat at both. Chipotle is near my work, but Taco Bell isn't. But when I'm driving around and want a $1 bean burrito, Taco Bell gets my business. Maybe at a mall, for dinner, I could see myself getting a cantina bowl. But it wouldn't be me choosing it over Chipotle, because they aren't there.
