  • Is The Perfect Storm Here?  [View article]
Amen! Not too much thriving capitalism in China that I can see...more like the usual thuggery and vicious opportunistic predatory enterprises --- the worst type of communism with a sugar coating.

Heretic that I am, I say capitalism thrives only when well regulated...and I see no entity but the Govt capable of doing that. Now we just need a real Govt and not one in the pockets of the various economic powers at play. "Free markets" tend to soon become corrupt markets as history has proven many times over.

I agree with the author's point about the cleansing that is needed, but I don't see it as a failure of govt. instead I see it as a failure of a corporate-controlled non-government.

There is not much "democracy" or "government" left these days.

  • Why It's a Good Time to Short Netflix  [View article]
One correction -- Netflix did not have a streaming only service until this announcement. You had to buy, at a minimum, the one DVD unlimited plan to get streaming. Now they offer a true streaming only plan.

I agree the stock looks over-valued. But that's what I thought when it hit 80, too. ;)

I would not underestimate the company. I do think the stock is over-extended. But I'm not shorting it.

"It seems to me, based on moves in the US dollar and nearly every other liquid asset class, that QE2 has largely been discounted by the market, so the only surprises are likely to go the other way."

That's exactly what we did here in America, we devised a form of government that protects the rights of individuals and minorities while preserving majority rule, yet protecting against the accumulation of too much power by any one group, including especially the wealthy and powerful. It's worked out fairly well, but is currently being challenged a bit.

And many private employers "match" employee contributions to their 401k's to some extent. So it's not that different.

I really fail to understand all the animus against the govt. and govt. employees. It's just hateful and misguided. I have worked mostly in the private sector, had my own business for many years, and worked 6 yrs in state govt. The govt workers were no different than the private sector. Most were hard-working, dedicated, decent people.

People forget that most state and local govt workers get a lower salary and far less generous raises than in the private sector. Their pension benefit is about their only "win" and compared to large corps generous 401k's - maybe not even that.

Most govt workers are people who believe in service and making the world a better place. Like school teachers, firemen, policemen, the military, health care and social workers, rangers, engineers and so on.

So, bless you, Tahuaya, and thanks for your many years of service educating our future citizens. And my thanks to all of you other dedicated govt workers out there. If only more people knew how valuable your service to this country is.

Govt is not the enemy people, it is us - it is how we regulate and govern our society and live together in relative peace and prosperity. Instead of demeaning it, how about trying to make it better? There's a far better ROI on that, I can assure you.

Apologies for going off-topic on this, but it needed saying.
