Jamba (JMBA) outlined its strategic priorities for 2013 at the ICR XChange Conference, saying it will put a new business model in place to ramp up the manufacturing and distribution of its branded products globally. With the new drivers in place, the company expects to see comparable store sales rise 4% to 6% in FY13 and store-level margin to reach 20%. (webcast)

With the franchising model and some other changes, JMBA has now proven this out as 2012 will be a positive earnings year. This, PLUS the big new revenue stream with JambaGo! WASHINGTON--The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved the first seasonal influenza vaccine produced without the use of fertilized chicken eggs.

The vaccine, produced by Novartis AG, (NVS, NOVN.VX), was made using cultured animal cells, which is a technology that has been used for other types of vaccines for several decades. The FDA said an advantage of this technology is the potential for the vaccine manufacturing process to begin faster in the event of a flu pandemic.

The vaccine will be sold with the brand name Flucelvax and is approved for use in adults ages 18 and older.

Seasonal influenza vaccines are typically designed to protect against three or four viruses that can cause the illness. Traditionally, the virus strains included in each year's vaccine are grown in chicken eggs, which are injected with influenza viruses and incubated for 11 days in order to produce the active ingredient in the vaccines. It takes about six to nine months for vaccine to be made and tested.

Flucelvax will eventually be made at a new Novartis vaccine plant in Holly Springs N.C., which received almost $500 million from the U.S. government in 2006 as part of a project to improve vaccine production and prepare for a pandemic. Other companies also received funding.

The Holly Spring plant will use a cell-culture system derived from a dog kidney that can be continually grown in a laboratory, which cuts as much as a month off the start of the egg-based process. Novartis has a plant in Germany that also uses the same cell-based technology.

The cells are infected with influenza viruses, which grow in 1,250-gallon steel tanks for three days before being extracted and purified and later placed inside a shot. Cell cultures also eliminate the need for a continual supply of chicken eggs.

Write to Jennifer Corbett Dooren at jennifer.corbett@dowjo...

Jamba Juice (JMBA +0.5%) plans to follow up on its first year of profitability as a public company with a sweeping plan to grow sales and traffic. For the full-year, the company sees opening 40-50 Jamba Juice system stores, up to 15 international stores, 400-500 JambaGO automated outlets, as well as three spanking-new concept stores. In terms of numbers, the company has a leg up on Starbucks' Evolution Fresh juice business, but the juice market looks to be heating up with more competition.

Jamba (JMBA -2.9%) keeps pushing forward despite what was considered an ominous entry into the Smoothie market by Starbucks and McDonald's. JMBA +49.4% YTD.

If that takes off in the schools, it will be a HUGE win for JMBA. will drive store sales too. keep an eye on JambaGo progress............400 schools next year? If this works, it can easily multiply to 10,000 with the simple, low cost format.

That said, I remain LONG in my retirement account as I think there are too any potential positve variables out there, and the negative ones are fewer and far between.
