  • Apple (AAPL) is working on a cheaper iPhone that could launch later this year, the WSJ reports. One source says the device could resemble the regular iPhone, but "with a different, less-expensive body." The cheapest iPhone currently sold (the 8GB iPhone 4) goes for $450 unlocked, putting it out of the reach of many emerging markets buyers, as well as some prepaid buyers in developed markets.     consider that by lowering phone cost to the customer and attracting a new demographic, they maximize the number of people who own apple products. clearly, apple brand loyalty is huge. a move like this MIGHT affect margins in the short term, but long term profits are likely increased by maximizing the sheer number of apple owners.

    have been accumulating jan '14 and jan '15 calls over the past few weeks to take out any fiscal cliff short-term potential problem as well as cash in on what is likely to be increased chatter about the upcoming TV, with possible launch by next holiday season. they're not cheap, but should prove well worth the investment in time.

    i too have been adding to my LEAP calls for '14 and '15 over the past month. looking forward to earnings in the short term and TV talk ramping up in the longer term. i gotta believe that if you happen to have some spare $$ that needs a home, these LEAP calls are beckoning.
