  • Bearish Sentiment at Highest Levels Since July 2009 [View article]
Yep, we still bearish. We so bearish that even an excess of bearish sentiment is bearish.

  • Paul Krugman vs. Niall Ferguson: You Decide [View article]
So austerity is the way to the promised land? I haven't seen a corporation cut its way to prosperity yet, and if they can't do it, why should I assume a government can? Now, I'm more than willing to concede that Obi-Wan's spending priorities were misplaced, but I haven't seen the old saw "You've got to spend money to make money" disproven yet, and those economies (even socialist ones, like Germany) that wisely invest in infrastructure improvements may realize competitive advantages.
Just as an aside, has the Austrian government adopted the teachings of the Austrian school, or are they sticking with socialism?

  • Andy Grove Wants a Trade War: Dangerous Protectionism [View article]
It took Andy more than long enough to come around to this viewpoint. This is quite an epiphany for the king of the H-1(b) visa to be having.

  • The Failure of Capitalists to Act Like Capitalists [View article]
That statement is belied by the rise of China - still a Communist dictatorship, but a financial success story compared with the USA. Brazil, Russia, India, even Canada - socialist states all, yet all breeding capitalists. What about Ferdinand Piech - financial freebooter, bane of the shorts, corporate mover and shaker who rescued Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini from the scrap heap, and all while operating in the socialist heart of Europe?

Wouldn't investing the hoard in R&D be just as effective in jump-starting the economy?

  • Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful [View article]
The only consistent advice I see around here is "Buy gold." I see that a lot more often than I see "Buy AAPL." So is it just as untrustworthy?

  • The Worst Bear Market [View article]
So....Dr. Siegel vs. Dr. Nenner. The odds are either in favor of a collapse or they're not, based on what happened in the 1930s and 1940s?
    From mbkelly75:
"Indeed, from 1939, when the Germans began the war in Poland, through 1960, the real return on German stocks matched those in the United States and exceeded those in the U.K. Despite the total devastation that the war visited on Germany, the long-run investor made out as well in defeated Germany as in victorious Britain or the United States. The data powerfully attest to the resilience of stocks in the face of seemingly destructive political, social, and economic change."
    From Bildar:
"I think that Nenner is looking at data from the period from 1939 to 1942, and drawing some of his predictive conclusions from that."
Balance the one guru against the other, and it would lead me to predict stocks staying in a trading range for a while.
