Murray, I suggest you stay with index mutual funds and enjoy your 5-7% gains...whenever the overall market is thriving and not tanking. But that is not the way to build "a solid financial future"....unless you are 5 years old and have time to waste. The remarkable 20-30+% gains of many focused ETF's may be more risky, but that risk is offset by their growth potential. There is no conclusive answer to all this, but I would opine that most mutual funds will cease to exist within the next five years. Am not sure how far that path to Dublin may be, but I would like to arrive as soon as possible while the sun still shines.
