  • Following its fraud charge against Goldman (GS), the SEC is investigating whether other Wall Street firms misled investors over mortgage investments. But while the SEC can brag that it's sending a warning to Wall Street, it's also putting its own reputation on the line.  [View news story]
I have doubts about the SEC now mainly because of the timing of the announcment. Was it necessay to make the announcement during market hours? How many other stock prices were clobbered along with GS. Would the decline in the price of unrelated stocks been as high? I don't think so. I think the SEC should have waited until after the close of the Market and given the markets the weekend to settle out. I'm not questioning the validity of the suit. But, I do think the timing sucked.

  • Barron's Andrew Bary says Wall Street's reaction to the Goldman Sachs (GS) fraud charges is overblown. "Patient buyers of Goldman stock probably will come out ahead, given the company's low valuation and the likelihood that even a defeat at the hands of the SEC probably will be financially tolerable."  [View news story]
Why did the SEC announce this during Market hours? The FDIC doesn't even announce nickle/dime bank failures until after the market closes. At the very least, I would say the timing of the announcement was not very well thought out.

  • Warren Buffett takes a $1B (paper) haircut on Goldman Sachs' (GS) Friday plunge, and a hit to his reputation too.  [View news story]
The time to get greedy is when everyone else is fearful. Buffett said something like that. I'm personally going to watch this closely. This could very well be the best GS buy opprotunity in a long while. Initiate a position in a day or two and then add to it on the rise.
