I am both a Netflix investor and customer. I have taken profits on most of my 2012 stock purchase, but I still watch the industry closely. My biggest media concern is the future of convenient and reasonably-priced access to a diverse video library. To that end, I fear that consumers could lose big if they are persuaded to allow an end to DVD and Blu-ray disc rentals. Those discs compliment the good streaming that is on Netflix. Regular readers of my posts will also see me do battle with cable shills and with the very dangerous and potentially very costly delivery method known as pay-per-view. I live in Oklahoma and teach history at a community college here. Also, as a Greek-American concerned about news coverage that is slanted against the nations of Greece and Cyprus, I have also begun commenting about their concerns on a few Greek-related Seeking Alpha news stories with perspectives that readers might not get elsewhere.
Investing actively in the stock market since 1991 and becoming a "Nokia-millionaire" during the 1990's as they call us here in my home country Finland.
Motto: Buy low, sell high, enjoy life by giving happiness to your family & friends.
As a value driven investor, my investment approach is safe and cheap. I focus on investing in companies with extremely strong financial positions offering future growth at a discount. I take that same top-down approach and apply a synthesis of market implied growth rates in securities to isolate companies where existing assets of the business covers the market price. I closely monitor the underlying fundamentals of financial markets and the global economy.
Where my research typically diverges from convention is - incorporating a volatility based perspective to the fundamental analysis, enhancing the risk control in investing.
My career has been as a research scientist. My background is Physics/Engineering/Aerospace, and my recent work is in burn modifiers for DOD propellants and agent defeat additives for DHS.
As a landlord I'm a real estate investor/developer with a number of buildings in NJ and ME.
I'm also very active in securities, trading regularly, with a significant exposure in the options market. My primary discipline in the markets is that of "Chartist", or Technical Analysis. I've been trading for over 15 years, and have gone through the gamut of technical indicators over the years and have now settled on what I euphemistically call the "C-Fold" technique, as it requires a C-Fold towel to execute. I primarily trade trends now, seeking to enter long and short positions to maximize my return from any given trend that I identify.
I was also a member of the Worden Brothers Roundtable of Knights when I was using the Worden Brothers TC2000 software for doing my TA.
I am in the process of starting a blog which will have regular chart analysis of various securities that I find interesting. In the meantime, you can find commentary and charts on my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/vern.hoffmann.3?ref=tn_tnmn
