" I also have an iPhone 4 that I have had for a year -- under tremendous abuse -- and not one scratch."
BS. I have a 4s for the last year and under careful everyday use there are scratches all over the back. My son even commented how "bad" it was. Light scratches, but glass scratches.

If you point your camera directly at the sun there is a problem. Apple suggests you not point your camera at a light source.
There's a ~3 week wait time for Apple orders ... that suggests that there is a problem with production .... if you could walk into to any retail shop and get one ... that would be a problem because that would suggest that demand has dropped off.
It's either demand is a problem or it's production is a problem. ... Seems like slanted analysis doesn't it.

Brilliant!
Some people want a cover; some people don't. The share price will go up and the share price will go down.
I was watching CNBC and they asked the expert analyst on his opinion on the price of oil ... he said with great confidence. "It's might go up, it might go down but I'm sure that it won't stay at this price." .... and the talking heads nodded in awe with his insights.

"The price is due to people doing due diligence on Apple and finding lots of complaints from customers and Foxconn employees about the scratches."
Really? And you know that because?
70% of the market is high frequency trading which has absolutely nothing to do with fundamentals. It's programmed trading done on technicals. Add on to that your day traders. And while both groups are deemed "investors", neither has anything to do with fundamentals.
Are all three major indices are down today because of fundamentals?
Last Thursday was a "Romney Rally" because Romney did so well in the debate. That was followed by several crappy days when Romney's poll numbers increased.
It's called cherry picking the data, or fabricating it in some instances. As in you have absolutely no data to support your theory that the price is due to scratches.

The trade off between the iphone 4/4s and iphone 5 is the 4 series will be more resilient to scratching; the 5 is 50% less likely to break.
If the owner puts their phone in a case, they would be happier with the aluminum.
I have yet to find any data that says what % of iphone owners use cases. But I do know that there are a lot of cases for sale which makes me think there is a market for them.

The iphone 5 I got was flawless. Foxconn is having trouble coming up with phones without scratches? How much trouble. What % of phones are coming out with scratches? 1%, 2%, 50% ... it makes a difference. "having trouble" doesn't answer that question.
People, in general, seem to have difficulty understanding the difference between anecdotal and a representative illustration. Our own personal experiences are anecdotal and not extendable. If you were to tell me that 37.6% of iphone 5 units are being returned for manufacturing flaws and your 5 had scratches consistent with other reports ... now we have something. Suppose on the first delivered batch 2m preorder + 5m retail, the scratch rate was 0.1%, that's 7,000 phones. Would you hear about it, probably. The first buyers are more likely to be vocal about it. Do they still have a 0.1% rate or has that been fixed and it's now 0.001%? How much impact will that have on the golden quarter? Is it going to change the EPS from 13.97 to 12.969999?
If I get an iphone 5 and it has a small scratch, do I return it? Maybe, maybe not. If I don't plan on putting it in a case, I wouldn't unless I wanted to have the honor of putting the first scratch on it. We can speculate a whole bunch of IFs.

Nokia could go bankrupt even if Windows 8 is a success. And Windows 8 acceptance isn't without it's own issues ...
"Microsoft faces a major challenge when it comes to propagating Windows 8 in the marketplace quickly. In order for the operating system to succeed, software developers must write applications that take advantage of touchscreens in new devices. Many Windows 8 software developers I've spoken with recently, though, view writing apps for Windows 8 touch mode as ineffective because they believe that the majority of PCs and laptops shipping next year will be without touchscreens.
For many software developers, this is a resources problem. They know that people will still use Windows software in desktop mode and so this is where their development dollars are going now. They are hesitant to devote major resources to writing apps for touchscreen devices since they don't know how many people will buy laptops with touchscreens, and thus become a serious audience for their software.
These developers are also unsure how big the Windows 8 tablet market will be in the next 18 months. Apple and Samsung have such a huge lead in tablets in the enterprise market now and at best, Windows 8 will play third fiddle to them at least through mid-2013.
Microsoft has committed a lot of money to pay major software players to write Windows 8 touch apps, but even given that effort, I will be surprised if the Windows 8 store launches with more than 3,000 touch-based apps. And on Windows RT-based systems, its store will be lucky to launch with the same number of apps. ....
I'm pretty sure Apple had competition in the past, has competition now, and will continue to have competition in the future. As far as Samsung ..... who is Samsung hurting more, Apple or the other Android smartphones. HTC is getting beat up on the high end by Samsung and the low end by a Chinese maker whose name escapes me at the moment.
HPQ has lower YOY earnings. I'll bet that has something to do with it's low P/E. DELL doesn't even look like it's going to make 50 cents a quarter in any quarter next year.
You think RIMM will still be around in 2014? There next product release is scheduled for the first quarter CY 2013. I suppose the wanted their products to stand out and not get lost in the holiday quarter rush. Great idea. We'll see how that strategy pans out.

And what makes you think that your refusal to upgrade from a 4 to a 5 or upgrade to the Nokia 920 has any value other than to display a level of arrogance?
Are you the Kim Kardashian of smartphone buying and have a huge following of buyers that are following your every move?
I wish to hell, that people would get over themselves and stop pretending that they're the great oracle. And that goes for the pro-Apple bulls as well. Get over yourselves. Your own purchase decision in a sea of several hundred million smartphones is about as important as the opinion of an ant in the state of Iowa.
I picked out a Galaxy S III for my wife, played with it for a weekend and decided it wasn't worth my time. Paid the restocking fee and ordered an iPhone 5. .... I'm another ant in the sea of several hundred million smartphones and Samsung will do just fine without me.
If someone asked me what Android phone to buy, I'd tell them to get a Nexus, because it's the only Android phone that you have any confidence that you will get an Android OS upgrade. My opinion doesn't mean squat to Samsung sales other than to the 30th decimal point.
Consumer Reports will influence more people than I could imagine everyone on Alpha influencing the market.
People are going to buy different products. Period. Samsung isn't going away and neither is Apple. Nokia may go away and maybe RIMM will also. But your purchase of a Nokia 920 won't make one iota's difference whether Nokia goes tits up or not.
I'm not interested in what you purchase. I'm interested in how many units Apple is going to sell and what their EPS is going to be.
Rant over. Sorry for the blowup, that was the straw the broke the camel's back.

He's differentiating between the adapter and the USB cable. You get the cable with the iPhone 5. The adapter to go from 30 pin to lightning is a separate purchase.
Apple is doomed either way. You have people bitch and moan because Apple isn't doing anything different like making a phablet and they bitch and moan when they do something different.
Can you imagine the bitching and moaning from people had they increased the width of the iPhone ... it won't fit my docking station or my speakers or my ..... whine, whine, whine.
These people are spending ~$300 on a phone, another $x on a data service, buying apps, ..... and god knows how much on all the toys they have with it ..... but a $29 adapter or a $19 cable is going to break the bank.
BTW. As I was setting up my wife's iPhone last night and transferring music and syncing, etc. I noticed that the iPhone 5 charges over the USB cable during sync. That was a pleasant surprise. Not a deal maker, but it was nice. It's like the lightning cable. Did it kill me to pay attention to the direction of the 30 pin corrector when I plug in my iPhone 4s? Of course not. But it's nice that I don't have to pay attention to it with lightning and that lightning connector and receptacle are designed so it's much easier to make the connection. It's nice. Not something to shout from the mountain tops, it's just a nice addition to the ease of use.
The downside is I'm going to get increasingly annoyed with all my other toys that I have to plug in mini-usb chargers ... thinking ... why couldn't the industry standardize on a plug that I didn't have to pay attention to direction?

You think that your cable provider gets those units at those prices?
My cable provider is Verizon and the market segment is the Baltimore-Washington area. A pretty large segment.
But you don't understand who Apple is competing against. Verizon provides a Motorola built set top box. Apple isn't competing against the Verizon, they would be competing against Motorola. Apple would make the set top box for the cable provider and the cable provider distributes the box to their customers. How the cable provider charges the end user isn't important to either Motorola or Apple.
The question is what does Verizon pay Motorola? That's what Apple is going after. What does your cable provider pay to the manufacturer of your set top box? It isn't "the first one is free", I'd bet you that.
