    WSB headlned it today:

    "Economy
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that a patient being treated at a Dallas hospital has tested positive for Ebola, the first case diagnosed in the U.S. The patient was placed under strict isolation, and CDC and Texas health officials are working to identify and monitor anyone who may have come into contact with the patient. In response to the case, Ebola-related stocks are jumping. Premarket: BCRX +14.5%; SRPT +5.5%; NLNK +13.7%; INO +3.2%; NNVC +12%; TKMR +26.7%."

I hope the health dept officials can trace contacts completely and get them quarantined.

And from Segarra's recordings it is rather evident that the embedded Fed regulators are a bunch of chickens who want to join the foxes' club.

from the full WSJ article today:

    http://bit.ly/1rmrzDq (paywalled)

Google search for "EU to Publish Details of Probes of Tax Deals Benefiting Apple, Fiat" to get past paywall

    >>The commission will base its deci-sion in Apple's case on guidelines on transfer pricing established in 2010 by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, a club of rich countries, a person familiar with the matter said.

The move came after earlier efforts by the EU to crack down on tax avoid-ance and tax evasion made painfully slow progress and yielded little. De-spite much hand-wringing by some politicians over Ireland's low corpo-rate tax rate, tax policy remains largely in the hands of national gov-ernments, which can veto EU deci-sions.
    <<

So the EU wants to declare as illegal deals from 1991 and 2007 based on rules formulated in 2010.

How do the Eurocrats think they can declare illegal a tax deal between Apple and Ireland in 1991 when the EU was not even founded until 1993?

    Absurd.

The radio episode of This American Life that Lewis is referring to, featuring Carmen Segarra's recordings:

    Michael Lewis writes well.

    >>
It's an extraordinary document. There is not space here to do it justice, but the gist is this: The Fed failed to regulate the banks because it did not encourage its employees to ask questions, to speak their minds or to point out problems.

Just the opposite: The Fed encourages its employees to keep their heads down, to obey their managers and to appease the banks. That is, bank regulators failed to do their jobs properly not because they lacked the tools but because they were discouraged from using them.
    <<

The fallacy is in believing the purpose of the Fed is to "regulate" banks. The reality is it was created over a century ago at Jekyll Island not to regulate, but to enable the banksters, by the very banksters it was supposed to be oveseeing.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Goldman Sachs?

Funny thing about those hundred share lots. I bought a total of 500 shares at the close yesterday, using Limit orders of 3.50.

The first 400 shares went in three trades that exhausted the offers in the 3.20's to 3.35, and the last 100 shares got filled at 3.50, to close the day at that price.

So those 100 share lots offered by the MM's actually helped me in my painting with artful upward strokes. ;-)

    Excellent points, MM.

Ebola thrives in primitive jungle conditions, and requires the animal reservoirs of bats and jungle apes to keep the virus around when humans are not spreading it. Conditions in North America are quite hostile to such tropical diseases, and our standard public health measures would prevent human-to-human spread.

Excellent idea, Mathieu. SDRL Nov 22nd PUTS of $25 and $26 have at least $1 premium at present, same as the quarterly div. This could be a nice way to accumulate more at a further discount.

I don't have the free cash for such at the moment, or I might write those PUTs myself.

    Tim,

I have been in and out of SDRL a once in the past and bought back in last month, thinking the drop to $35 was a bargain.

It is even more of a bargain today. ;-)

    Mercy's points are well-taken.

The yield is now >14%, and if you DRIP, it may be worth putting a few shares in the sock drawer and letting it grow. That is my strategy, to hold it and not seek a quick trade.

Novavax's Influenza Vaccine Study Shows Adjuvant Efficiency

    http://bit.ly/1v0N5xG

    >>
...announced positive top-line data from a dose-ranging, randomized, observer-blinded, placebo-controlled phase I/II study on its H7N9 avian influenza virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate, H7N9 VLP.

The study was conducted under Novavax’s contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the development of VLP vaccines for influenza with pandemic potential.

The study evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of H7N9 VLP plus adjuvant Matrix-M in 610 healthy participants. H7N9 VLP and Matrix-M were well tolerated among the patients.

    Excellent point, HTL.

The pipeline is still early, with Phase II for RSV and flu vaccines, and still in the preclinical stage for rabies.
    http://bit.ly/10zsWRL

The adjuvant research pipeline is similarly in early stage.
    http://bit.ly/1rkx17w

Both technologies, with the virus-like particle approach to vaccines (http://bit.ly/1rkxaYr) and the novel adjuvant work are very promising, and may take years more to reach a mature commercial product.

    Agreed, HTL. "Present once."

So the 2500 comments that essentially repeat "Axion has kicked my butt for the last five years and now I am sore," should be forthwith dispensed with.
