Beware 'Dividend Aristocrats' that Actually Offer Low Yields, No Real Income

Thank you thank you for another great column. Of course I love these columns because they reaffirm my own perspective.

And I also love my investment in Atlantic Power. I've bought more and more in these past few months; love those monthly dividends and the knowledge that it will not be affected by the 2011 tax change in Canada.

Beware 'Dividend Aristocrats' that Actually Offer Low Yields, No Real Income

When the stock price increases, the per cent yields only decrease on paper. If you buy the stock when the yield is 8%, and hold the stock, your basis determines the yield if the actual payout remains the same; you are still getting the 8%.

I've been an investor in Canroys since 2005, and of course the last year has decimated them. I sold off my PVX last year and some of a too large holding in HTE, but I still own several CanRoys. Cliff's writings are enabling me to make some plans for the future.

I own several of these stocks; have owned Atlantic Power for years, and the dividends just keep rolling in monthly. It doesn't matter to me that the price has been fluctuating; I've just bought more when it goes down.

Recently bought T and VZ paying over 6% quarterly. They both are well captialized; the dividends appear solid, and people are not going to stop using wireless phones.
