  • Liquefied Natural Gas Fuels Strong Growth For Cheniere Energy [View article]
The title implies some growth has already happened, but if anything (going from memory here) their timelines have slipped. Sabine Pass won't produce for at least another 18 months, and Corpus Christi around 2019.
With shorter lead-time solutions available now, like Dresser's LNGo, the probability of increased competition before go-live is much higher.

  • GM adds to record recall tally with another 218K [View news story]
Does it scream that? I hear something else. I hear them saying, "It's time to ignore those penny-pinching, money-grubbing Wallstreeters who think they know how to run a company and fix the problems, even if it means we miss our next quarterly numbers."

  • After Earnings Miss, Wal-Mart Should Buy Whole Foods [View article]
WMT is a (very successful) one-trick pony that serves as a defensive cyclical. It shouldn't be a wild surprise that they fade a bit as we enter an improved economy. WFM is a counter to that, which may have some value. I see the biggest risk to such a move, though, as being the integration of two very different managements: Arkansas supply-chain whipmasters vs. the granolacentric bio-purveyors.

  • An Open Letter To The General Motors Board Of Directors And Shareholders [View article]
While I applaud your vocal representation of shareholders' interests, I think you have omitted two key points worthy of analyses:
    1. Impact of repatriating offshore cash. I suspect much of the balance is just that.
    2. Alternative uses of the cash. In one way, car company is like an oil driller, the field will stop producing if you don't keep up a drilling program. That ongoing capex maintains the status quo. But to improve and gain share, GM could take advantage of its global competence to invest in ways that help not just trail Honda & co., but one day kick its butt. To my mind, that would be the better value to investors, and also a key focus of the board's pressures.

  • St. Joe Co. Ready For A Short Squeeze [View article]
Given that the rate of sea level increase is about 7 inches per century, you give new meaning to "long-term investor" :)

  • Is Herbalife A Pyramid Scheme? A Simple Question Of Law [View article]
"The test is whether distributors receive compensation unrelated to sales to "ultimate users"."

In other words, 3rd party sales. But I wonder how they track that. I also notice that their SG&A expenses rose over 60% in 2 years vs the 39% growth in Sales, and wonder if they're paying out more in sales compensation than they should.

  • Dresser-Rand Is Still No Bargain [View article]
Before I can say I have any faith in the management team (which is really hard given the transparency issues Michael mentions), I would like to understand the strategy of releasing the bad news a week before the scheduled earnings release??? To me it conveys discombobulation at the top.
They have never hinted at significant exposure to government subsidies, and the only mention of the pigshit business was a note in relation to a $20M loan. Maybe 2013 would have been a good time to mention it when the topic of Spain's tariff deficit was all over the news.

  • Exelon: Selling At 10-Year Lows [View article]
What is supposed to drive natural gas prices higher? Given the great glut in the shale plays, the only thing I see on the horizon is when the LNG export terminals come on line in the 2015 range.

No, '14 will be weak to slow growth, then we see a rebound with inflation leading to misery around '18-'19.

  • Are These 2 Companies In General Electric's Sights? [View article]
Dresser has a lot of overlapping business with GE (reciprocating compressors, turbines, engines), and sure hasn't lived the GE management style. I'm not so sure they're willing to pay the stiff PE, especially when the mediocre growth rates start coming out this quarter.
Wait for the stock top tank a bit, then it may get interesting.
