  • Kinder Morgan Partners up, KMI down after posting Q4 earnings [View news story]
Rich Kinder had some very interesting thoughts on the share price during the analyst call. Worth the listen.

"My message to those that see the story less positively: You sell, I buy and we'll see who comes out best in the long run." Love the man.

Rich Kinder also mentioned that at their analyst day they will layout projected distributions going out to 2018. That's some nice long term thinking.

  • Intel's CES Keynote: That's Nice, But... [View article]
I don't think the keynote was meant to showcase what Intel is doing now, rather it was meant to showcase the exciting things in the pipeline. Intel is trying to show that they are no longer going to accept being just the PC behemoth, but they are going to put a chip in everything. It's forward thinking. There were some new tablet and smartphones announced with Intel inside, Intel just wasn't the ones that announced them (Acer announced a slew of them, including the Iconia A1-830 running android for example).

  • Kimberly-Clark higher after growing sales through volume [View news story]
The money quote from the conference call, and why I invest in the company, was when asked if the government shutdown had any effect on 3rd quarter results. Tom Falk responds with, "Not really I mean mostly people need diapers and bathroom tissue everyday, no matter what’s going on in Washington and that was the case..." Love the company.

    Long KMB

I am getting awfully tired of all these "pre-tax" write-offs LEG has been doing.

  • The Simple Case For Intel [View article]
How does the recently authorized $20B (~12% of float), and $4B for this quarter, go into this calculation?

  • Realty Income expects 2014 FFO growth of 5-8% [View news story]
What am I missing? Seems like a decent quarter, with decent guidance. Mr Market doesn't seem to like it though...

It's not moving much because most of the news has been baked into the price already. Rising interest rates don't help the price either.

  • AT&T (T -5.4%) gets slammed as 3 downgrades arrive in response to its Q1 revenue miss, the result of soft wireless subscriber adds and declining wireline revenue. There might also be concerns about whether lowering 2014/2015 capex targets (to fuel more buybacks?) is a bright idea in light of flagging growth. AT&T's 296K Q1 postpaid net adds (boosted by tablets) and 184K prepaid net losses are easily worse than Verizon's respective net adds of 677K and 43K. On the earnings call, AT&T mostly blamed wireline weakness on macro and government issues, rather than legacy voice service declines. VZ -1.9%. CTL -4%. WIN -2.2%. FTR -1.1%[View news story]
I agree that T is strong, but some things have me nervous. The postpaid phone base slipped (-74,000), as well as softer margin growth and FCF growth than VZ. I don't think this was a great quarter for ATT.

  • Looks like another bad day for refiners on fears of increased costs from tougher standards on gasoline, even as BAML says yesterday's selloff of Valero (VLO -4.8%) was overdone. WNR -7.6%, PSX -6.9%, MPC -6.2%, ALJ -6.1%, NTI -5.3%, TSO -4.7%, HFC -4.7%. CVR Refining (CVRR -1.5%) is lower even after announcing estimated costs to meet Tier 3 standards are less than $20M[View news story]
I agree, way overdone. CVI looks pretty cheap at these prices.

  • It's worth noting that Macquarie, in sounding the alarm over biofuels costs that could hurt earnings for refiners, thinks the problem won't hurt all refiners equally. It says the well positioned companies are those that are better integrated between refining and midstream product terminal assets that support self-blending of ethanol, such as MPC, NTI, TSO and WNR[View news story]
To be fair, from the analyst call yesterday John Lipinski said, "...we do ethanol blending at Wynnewood and at Coffeyville, which is not insubstantial, but the majority of our product goes out on the Magellan and NuStar pipelines and at that point, no control of blending." But I agree that the downgrade is over-blown
