Amazon (AMZN) will start to collect sales tax in Texas this weekend in what marks the first step as its new role as a tax collector in states where the company doesn't maintain a physical presence. The crucial question over whether or not Amazon will lose its edge with consumers from its long-time pricing advantage will now be played out.

"The private sector is doing fine." Pres. Obama later clarified his odd remark - private sector jobs remain 4.6M below their Jan. 2008 peak - but noted their relative strength vs. public sector job growth shows it has "not been the biggest drag on the economy." His point was that the loss of public sector jobs, down ~600K in three years, is a problem "the federal government could, with 100% certainty, fix."

Housing prices in just 2 of the 20 largest U.S. metro areas have returned to 2006 levels - Dallas and Houston. Oil? Luck? Perhaps, but a Texas law requiring any homeowner refinancing a mortgage or taking out a home equity loan to have at least 20% equity in their home may have helped shield the state from at least part of the housing bust.

In the next step after Dish Network's (DISH) pre-emptive legal strike, Fox (NWS), NBC (CMCSA) and CBS have now all sued the satellite provider over its commercial-skipping "AutoHop" technology, claiming copyright and licensing violations. Subtle questions over who controls the skipping could dictate whether Dish faces the fate of ReplayTV: being sued out of existence.

The S&P warning on U.S. debt was silent on the real danger to the economy and the federal budget: Growth could be derailed by letting too-big-to-fail banks become irresponsible again or by allowing continually rising healthcare costs, Simon Johnson writes. He fears S&P's "broad-brush" warning could whip up debt hysteria and push policies that quickly undermine growth.

GM's China strategy, working so well now, could eventually become a detriment, Heard On The Street says. Its joint-brand approach will boost Chinese sales but will also add horsepower to China's homegrown efforts to eventually target drivers the world over - a strategy Japan's automakers used to great effect decades ago.

I think people know that you cannot trust the Government to do anything. Time will tell if they will be successful. The Volt will require never ending subsidies of to force it on the people. The trade in value of the Volt will be questionable. At the recent Kelly Blue Book Awards meeting at LA Auto Show, Govt Motors did not have a single vehicle in the top twenty Used Car residual Value winners. The Progressive liberal Companies and People will buy these vehicles, Conservatives will not. Giving the unions the equity and taken away from the stockholders and bond holders will never be forgotten. So show me where the government was last successful at anything. The way this ipo was approached just enables distrust when you give 80% of the offering to Foreign governments and wallstreet cronies and hedge funds. People need to wake up to the facts.

Government and Government Motors out of control. This whole thing is built on sand and without a good foundation the Auto Business in the U. S. will go the way of the other failed industries with out of control union demands and protection by the liberals as a major cause of the failure. The Auto Industry has not been saved nor have jobs been saved. In the end the market will decide these issues.
