  • Target: Customer Passion Still Compels Profits [View article]
The common but mistaken perception is that Target is more expensive than Walmart yet when comparing like items as a whole, the difference is very marginal. But what sets Target apart product wise is the unique in house and designer designed products, non-commodities in a commodity market. There is more style offered, yet prices are well below the traditional designer goods available elsewhere. The result is more value in the products, combined with more value in the overall shopping experience, which is well documented.

This is why margins are higher, as they should be. The tough market is hurting Target in that people are cutting back on non-essential goods. This can't last forever and eventually consistent results will return.

  • Target's Folly [View article]
The company is full of experts in all aspects of retail. The board is about having a wide range of expertise in many industries. And Target believes in developing managers and putting them in challenging positions. The current CIO came from the credit card side of the business, not IT.

Ackman is a short term opportunist and anything he proposes is to get his money out of the company, not improve it for the long term. He messed up by concentrating on one firm in a down market, how stupid is that?

  • Seeing an End to the iPod's Hegemony [View article]
Maybe the leveling off you mentioned is the whole market, not just Apple. In other words, everyone who wants one, has one. In a maturing market, will be even harder for someone to put a dent in Apple. Their players work and no one wants a better alternative so being locked in isn't a big deal.

  • Nikon's New D90 Steals Canon's 50D's Thunder [View article]
its way to early to call a winner here. Yes the Nikon has some unusual bells and whistles but some people care about image quality and thats largely unknown right now. Canon has notably upped the resolution while claiming improved high ISO performance while the Nikon appears to use the same chip as the 300D so its performance is more predictable. Won't surprise me at all if the Canon has better image quality.

  • Apple Co-Founder Thinks iPhone Price Cuts Reflect Inventory Problems [View article]
Well of course he's right, you don't have to be a genious or have inside knowledge to have this opinion. They cut the price because they want to sell more. Apple is among the shrewdest when it comes to pricing and they don't leave any money on the table. They rationalize the price cut by saying they want to assure a gangbuster holiday season but there is more to it than that.
