  • Royal Caribbean cancels Alaska cruises [View news story]
Essentially they are. They are getting a full refund for their cruise as well as a credit for the same amount for a future cruise. This is after they had 6 of their scheduled 7 nights on the ship with all meals and entertainment as usual. They did miss visiting most of their ports. as they were docked in Ketchikan for 4 nights.

  • Royal Caribbean (RCL) announces it signed an agreement to construct a third Quantum-class ship to be delivered sometime in the middle of 2016. The cruise line operator indicates customer response to the vessel type has been very favorable. RCL +0.2% premarket. [View news story]
Although there was a fire on a Royal ship it did not need to be towed back to port. That happened to a couple Carnival ships over the last few years.

Royal has been able to maintain strong pricing on it's Oasis Class ships and has a 3rd one under construction. When they opened bookings for the first Quantum Class ship last week there were reports of hour long waits on hold as people wanted to book there voyages on the new class of ship.

  • Carnival (CCL -1%) will spend over $600M to add extra generators and improved fire suppression systems to its fleet of ships run under the Carnival Cruise Lines flag and other cruise lines it owns. The string of headline-grabbing incidents this year with Carnival ships has affected Wave Season bookings, according to industry watchers. While Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH -0.9%) is showing strong demand and Royal Caribbean (RCL -0.8%) is mildly ahead of last year's pace, Carnival is discounting prices by as much as 8% and bookings are off by over 10%. [View news story]
Carnival will discount as much as they need to in order to keep their ships filled. These numbers are not much of a surprise. Their other brands can help support them as they get passed this. The announced addition of back up systems should help as well.
I am long on both CUK and RCL.

  • Unsure About Markets? Why These Great Companies Are A Good Buy [View article]
    Interesting artical.
I would point out one error I noticed involving the shipboard credits offered by CCL and RCL. They are "up to $250". For a one week cruise they are $100.
I have held both stocks for a long time and have taken advantage of the credit many times.

  • Cruise Lines Into 2013 - Royal Caribbean Strongly Undervalued Compared With Peers [View article]
I am a very experienced cruiser having sailed over 60 times on 9 different cruise lines over the last 35 years. I am also a stockholder in RCL and CCL.
I agree with the comments about RCL as an investment. I must add my disagreemant with NCL as a premium line. I believe the numbers you site as income per berth do not reflect the fact that NCL operates very much with a a 2 class system onboard. There are a small number of very large villas that are sold at much higher prices than the rest of the ship. There is also a fair amount of extra space dedicated to those suites.
