"I read that in a comment on the link. If that is incorrect, fair enough."

No Dave, it's not really "fair enough" to spread complete nonsense that you read in some Internet comment with no evidence. It's rather irresponsible, if you were actually interested in rationality and truth as you claim.

"Peter, I will give you this: your faith is very impressive."

I ask for evidence. Outfornow tells me this is faith. I agree: faith in evidence.

"LG Chem has come out with a battery that proves it [the gigafactory] was completely unnecessary"

What in the world makes you think that? The Bolt announcement? Announced with no battery or performance specs, and a price above the target for Model 3?

"But when I try to talk about the economics of the car business, distribution models, cash flows, etc."

cynic, I didn't see you try to talk about those here. You were too busy talking about your intellectual superiority.

Dear me, so many frustrated bears. My heart weeps for those forced to watch the irrationality of bulls who won't believe demand is falling when production is doubling.

I'm not trained in accounting or finance, and never claimed to be. But I understand a basic fact about growth companies: First they invest, then they can profit from those investments. A company with exponentially growing revenue and a 30% gross margin is not hurtling toward bankruptcy as long as they invest wisely, and I see no reason to believe Tesla is not investing wisely. Comparing financial metrics with other automakers is quite silly, since other automakers are not growing 50-100% per year. Investing cash is not the same as burning cash, and is not a concern as long as the cash doesn't run out. With Tesla's AWD a smash hit, Model X coming in a few months, and no competition in sight for years, I don't expect Tesla to run out of cash.

Yes I'm well aware the word "cash" has a meaning in accounting that is different from the common-language meaning. That doesn't mean the common usage is moronic. But as I said, priesthoods like to pretend their jargon makes them smarter.

Tom, only ICE and fuel cell cars have a problem with blowing you to bits. Sure, doesn't happen often, but when it does boy are you in trouble!

Of course you have ignored the frequency question yet again, and it is the most relevant question.

"Thats a serious question, one that my good buddy Peter can't seem to respond to."

The question Tom has repeatedly ignored is: how low are the odds of a Supercharger disaster? Any car trip can be interrupted by a flat tire, or crash, or really bad Chinese food, but those disasters don't happen frequently enough to stop people from traveling.

Marketlost, in this thread, cynic has said basically nothing except he knows all about Tesla and I know nothing. I'm not sure how he can say that more sweetly.

cynic, you seem to have missed my point that your jargon and your self-importance are no assurance that you know the future of the most innovative automaker in a century. So you are an academic AND a fund "associate." Congratulations. You might know more about Tesla's business than Elon Musk and the world-class teams he has assembled... but I doubt it.

Tom, try googling "representative sample." You'll find many definitions of the term. If you can't grasp one definition, try reading another.

"you don' t know squat (that's an official finance term)"
Some academics are so proud of their jargon, and so delight in ridiculing people outside their priesthood, that they think their ability to analyze facts and logic is superior. In grad school, I found they are often mistaken.

"I am thrilled to have you here, and to have seen yours (and others) breathless defense of all things TSLA"
cynic, if you think pointing out the contradiction between doubling of revenue and falling demand is irrational allegiance, well, there you have it. Faculty dismissed.

Anton, I can wait another month for that number. Waiting a month is not a catastrophe.
