  • Shares of Wal-Mart (WMT +0.4%) trade just a hair below $70 as they continues to shrug off the company's scandal in Mexico and etch out new 52-week highs right and left. The prevailing sentiment is that a sluggish, but growing, economy could be sitting in the company's sweet spot for maximizing sales as bargain shoppers continue to flock to its stores with nary a thought about bribery allegations.  [View news story]
certainly easy to ignore bribery charge in country where bribery is accepted as business model, suggest not ignoring bribery in USA where currying political favors is mandatory. WMT pays me dividends, the administration does not and only takes my money.

  • The debate on the link between soda intake and obesity stays in the national conversation with new pieces out in medical journals that find corporate social responsibility campaigns from beverage giants Coca-Cola (KO +0.4%) and PepsiCo (PEP -0.4%) serve more to shift blame to consumers than provide a public service. Despite all the sound and fury over the last month after NYC Mayor Bloomberg kickstarted the discussion, sales figures from soda companies are reportedly as strong as ever. [View news story]

  • A publicity stunt by McDonald's (MCD +0.1%) to temporarily open its largest restaurant ever in London as the hype over the Summer Olympic starts up backfires to a degree when local official complain over the company's ties to obesity issues at an event that stresses physical achievements. The company has defended itself by pointing to healthier options on its menu and asking rhetorically why beer companies are seemingly given a pass. [View news story]

  • Oppenheimer cuts its target price on ConocoPhillips (COP +1.1%) shares to $65 from $90 while retaining its Outperform rating, and adjusts EPS estimates for FY12 and FY13 to reflect the Phillips 66 spinoff. The key to higher valuation is COP's strategy of maximizing cash return to shareholders through the large dividend and opportunistic share repurchases, the firm says.  [View news story]

  • Cowen's Doug Creutz comes at Disney's (DIS) new Pixar movie Brave from a different direction, noting that despite its strong opening weekend the movie marks the 2nd consecutive Pixar feature to draw shaky critical reviews. The analyst says that with Disney on the hook for $7.4B to buy the creative spark at Pixar, results need to be consistently high to ensure a long-term return on the mega-investment. [View news story]

  • TechRadar provides the first meaningful review of Microsoft Surface. Its comments are mostly positive, praising Surface's design, ergonomics, and keyboard covers, as well as the performance of apps on Windows RT (MSFT). However, commentary about its software is relatively light. TechRadar's verdict: "Surface doesn't feel like an iPad (AAPL) in your hands; it feels like a well-designed Windows tablet crammed with clever touches that make it practical."  (earlier)  [View news story]

  • ConocoPhillips (COP) -1.2% premarket after shares are downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs. COP "continue[s] to trade more like a defensive super major rather than a somewhat higher-beta domestic oil/E&P post the spin-off of its downstream assets," the firm says, as it sees greater upside elsewhere in the integrated/domestic oil and refiner sector.  [View news story]

  • Summer of discontent? European box office totals for major movie studios are getting smacked around by the mind-blowing TV ratings of the European soccer championships. In Germany, the nation's last group stage game drew a stellar 74.2% share that left movie theaters all but empty as the leading movie of the pack - Men in Black 3 - only earned a paltry €1.3M ($1.6M) for the weekend. The soccer games run for another two weeks and later this summer the Olympics take center stage. [View news story]
who wants to see the 3rd or 4th remake of a movie that was originally novel but is now just more of the same. the movie media have little real creative and imagination with fewer and fewer real actors. why spend to see overpriced drivel when you can see it, if you wish, in a few months on tv. the movie business is a dying business as are many brick and mortar malls.

  • ConocoPhillips (COP) CEO Ryan Lance creates a stir by warning OPEC oil ministers that North America could become self-sufficient in oil by 2025. Even if Lance overstated the likelihood for regional self-sufficiency, the potential for a radical reshape of the geopolitics and business of oil, especially if techniques pioneered in the U.S. can be copied elsewhere, must have been a cold slap in the face.  [View news story]
