    • Will Google Finance Take Share From Yahoo Finance? [view article]
James: I think explicitly filtering competing results would be stepping way over the line of what constitutes "do no evil" for Google. They still maintain that they provide the best, fairest results, even if that means ranking competing results above what they offer. Mar 22 01:29 AM
    • Ten Concerns With Apple's New iTV ('The iDongle') [view article]
Point 10 nails it for me. Why get a crippled device when i have the know-how to use a mac mini or even geek out with Linux and MythTV? I realize the iTV is meant for the totally tech-clueless user, but I'd guess that most people nowadays could figure out a Mini+EyeTV or even a well-integrate windows MCE solution.

I'm hoping Apple introduces some hefty upgrades for the ITV, otherwise it looks pretty unappealing to me.

    • 10 Reasons Why Microsoft's Vista Has Missed The Mark [view article]
For me the real story is the amazing oppurtunity Apple has during all of this. Over the next six to twelve months, there will be a lot of people with horror stories with Vista. If Apple gets Leopard out soon and can really push its advantages over Vista (ie 'it just works), they could really start to gain some share into the home market and in smaller companies who aren't bought into the MS infrastructure. • Did Starbucks' CEO Really Say That? [view article]
People don't go to starbucks because they love the coffee, they just love the experience and the coffee is _consistent_ and good enough. McDonalds is not consistent -- compare a cup at 4 pm versus 8 am...I bet the 4pm cup has been sitting on the burner for too long and is junk. Thats my experience at least, w/ regular mcdonalds that don't have the gourmet coffee yet.

Besides, people who want a truly great cup of coffee brew their own w/ filtered water and a nice burr grinder and all that. Or they go to local shops that they know and trust. They aren't going to starbucks or mcdonalds.

    • Why Apple's iPhone Doesn't Really Matter To Verizon [view article]
Its not about hardware or software, its about the total user experience. Thats something that Apple has mastered time and time again, and rivals just don't get. Every cell phone on the market right now *sucks*. UI is horrible, they are a pain to use, and everything is built around selling a provider's services instead of being easy and fun to use. Noone actually likes or enjoys using their phone - they are just tolerated because there are no other options.

The real question I see with the iPhone is how much of the UI and design is Apple versus how much is Cingular. If Cingular was able to apply enough pressure for pushing its own pay-per-use services, keeping things locked down (ie: no 3rd party apps), and keeping the overall experience about Cingular instead of the user, then the iPhone will be "just another smart phone". If Apple was and is able to maintain control in version 1 and beyond, then they will truly change the market the same way the IPod did.

    • Apple Wins When Content Is King [view article]
Stephen: the big attraction for windows on the mac is to run win-only software (ie MS money, or games, or weird little intranet apps). Its also key for web developers who want to test their sites cross-platform.

Trust me, noone who owns a mac really _wants_ to spend much time in a winxp environment - its just a necessary evil from time to time.

    • Big Media vs. Blogs: Longing for the Good Ol' Days [view article]
While I agree 100% with the changes you talk about, and welcome it, I think its going to take a long time for the mainstream to turn to digg or reddit before opening up their local newspaper. Right now digg is still very much a tech site, despite their attempts to go mainstream. I personally find much more relevant and engaging news via sites like reddit or metafilter, which might lead to a blog or to a old-world newspaper site, but I'm a blogger and a programmer and I realize I'm still very much in the minority in how I find news.

Also, I really wish the NY Times would "get it" and just open up all their content without registration. They would gain a lot more value from people deep linking their site versus the demographics they get from the stupid registration.

    • Microsoft's Strategy To Grab iPod Market Share: Subsidize Zune To the Tune of $150 [view article]
Microsoft could _pay me_ to use a Zune, but if it has a user experience anything like most MS products, I'll stick with my $200 ipod, thanks. Sep 20 10:39 PM
    • Oil's Slippery Slope: Why Crude and Oil Stocks May Be Headed Down, Fast [view article]
First - the small steps that some people are taking to cut their use of oil is really a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what is needed. Maybe if gas were $10/gal we'd see car and van pooling, mass transit, and thermostats at 60 in winter. As it is, I see most people buying a few compact flourescant lights and _maybe_ buying a mid size sedan instead of an Escalade.

Second - even if Americans were ready to make drastic changes to their lifestyle, what would it matter if Iran really did cut its oil supply? The price of just about every necessity would explode, and it wouldn't matter much how little John Doe drives if his grocery bill and heating bill is 3x as much.

Third - we know that there doesn't need to be an actual cut in supply to see it shock the world economy. All it takes is threat of a cut in supply or maybe a terrorist attack on Ghawar to send the price to new heights. If the US was actually burning through its reserves, can you imagine the resulting panic? No drilling in ANWR or Alberta oil shale would be able to take up the our slack and that of India, China, Japan, etc...
