  • 4 Financials To Buy And 1 To Avoid [View article]
This is my primary hesitation as well. My second is outstanding litigation. So far they've faired quite well, but from what I understand there could still be some potentially devistating stuff in the pipeline.

  • Self-confessed snobbish beer blog Beer & Whiskey Brothers openly questions how watered down American light beers such as Coors Light and Michelob Light are able to grab medals at the World Beer Cup with thousands of tasty craft brews on the scene. The answer from industry watchers is that giants such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD), Molson Coors (TAP), SABMiller (SBMRY.PK) still pack such a powerful punch with lobbyists and that craft breweries face an uphill climb to sales relevancy - with top players likely to get snapped up and the rest possibly doomed to unprofitability. [View news story]
"When the micros sell as much product as the majors, maybe then their claim to superior taste will be taken seriously."

Last I checked taste and quality wasn't about volume sold.

  • Nokia (NOK) announces partnerships with several major developers to introduce apps for Lumia Windows Phones - some of the apps will be exclusive to Lumia models for a limited time. Among the partners are ESPN, Groupon, PayPal, and (notably, given the back-story) Angry Birds maker Rovio. Though Windows Phone now has ~80K apps available, that figure still puts it well behind iOS and Android.  [View news story]
I am using anywhere from 15,000 - 20,000 apps at a given time during the day. It falls to ~5,000 while sleeping.

In all seriousness though, I do think having the "key" apps is important.

  • Nokia (NOK -6.4%) execs did their best to defend the company at its annual shareholder meeting in the face of crumbling sales, profits, market share, and debt ratings. But Robert Chmielinski is one investor who clearly isn't satisfied. He's filing a class-action suit against Nokia, alleging it misled investors by promising Windows Phone sales would strengthen its smartphone position. Nokia declares the suit to be without merit.  [View news story]
Is that seriously a lawsuit? Who is this joker?? I'm dumbfounded

  • Stung by its $200B boondoggle John Carter, Disney (DIS) is mounting a superhero-style marketing campaign to ensure The Avengers is a blockbuster. Expectations are high, as analysts say the Marvel Comics-inspired movie may generate U.S. ticket sales of $155M in its opening weekend, which would surpass last month's huge start by The Hunger Games.  [View news story]
You must not realize how bad this movie was.

They're also a lower cost domestic supplier, which in my eyes means that industry growth isn't the only avenue they have for growth - there's an opportunity to capture share of the existing market as well (granted there is the added complexity of supplier relationships that has to be considered as well).

Look at what MSPEA did with their preferred shares. If I remember they're convertable to common shares at $6.25 for the next three years (something to that effect). I.e. they essentially bought a three year call option with exercie price at $6.25 - my guess is that given their $100MM investment they've done some fairly thorough due dilligence, especially when you consider that all of the reverse merger activity throughout market had come to light by the time they bought in.

Yeah I would agree with that assessment, I was just curious to see if you had a different angle on it.

  • Footnoted does all the heavy lifting in analyzing the latest proxy statement filed by McDonald's (MCD +0.1%) with the SEC to find that key exec James Skinner stands in line to walk away with more than $80M by even a conservative estimate. The lush payout isn't likely to draw the investor backlash seen at other companies given McDonald's 300%+ return under Skinner's watch. [View news story]
Yeah I don't think anyone is upset.

  • That didn't take long. Massachusetts Sec. of the Commonwealth William Galvin slams Bank of America's (BAC +2.3%) consideration of new fee structures on its checking accounts, and proposes a law barring banks from holding state deposits if they don't offer basic checking without fees. Expect to hear soon from the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. (also)  [View news story]
Someone should tell this douche he has to offer free checking

  • Short Squeeze Among Dry Bulk Shippers? [View article]
I see what you're saying completely, but why now all of a sudden? I mean I've thought this forever, but I was waiting for bankrupcies to appear before I bought DSX. I kind of lean toward the short squeeze thesis for now.

Not positive, but from the research I've done that doesn't seem to be the case.
