  • Ford getting bigger in GM's rear-view mirror [View news story]
Does anyone else out there have a problem with the immense windshields on the new cars ? They require wipers the size of a yardstick. You can't even see the hood from the driver's seat. I think I'll keep my old cars.

Ford man: The Glass House wants Lincoln Dealers to be stand alone. However, they can't sell enough Lincolns to justify the expense.
With Mercurys also in the showrooms, they did have enough business. We had L-M dealers, instead of a few Lincolns in a corner of a Ford dealership.

Most of the Mercury sales went to Ford. Hardly any of it went to Lincoln. Many L-M dealers perished.

Lincoln cannot survive without Mercury. My household has a Grand Marquis, Sable, Mystique, Tracer, and 3 Cougars. Do you see the pattern ? Are you listening Mr Mullaly ?

We want Mercury to return. Lincolns are overpriced. Lincoln dealers cannot survive without Mercury.

  • Shares of Carnival (CCL, CUK) fall 6.8% following the company's guidance cut and a dispiriting wave of analyst downgrades. Though execs with the cruise line operator gave a spirited pitch for a turnaround during the Q1 earnings call (transcript), increased promotional activity continues to take a heavy toll on the company's sales and profits. [View news story]
Carnival seems to be a ship without a captain. Maybe the captain is at the Miami Heat games instead of concentrating on the cruise business. (The CEO owns the Miami Heat)

Come on Mickey, one job or the other. You can't do both !

  • Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL -1.2%) could hit choppy waters, according to Hedgeye. The research firm's monthly pricing survey shows Carnival is having to get very aggressive with promotions to keep cruises full - while peers Royal Caribbean (RCL -0.6%) and Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH -0.4%) continue to take advantage of the hit to Carnival's reputation this year. [View news story]
I think the CEO of Carnival needs to pay more attention to the cruise business and less time thinking about the Miami Heat, which he owns.

  • Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is back in the headlines after one of its cruise ships returns to port missing two passengers. Though surveillance video shows the pair falling into the ocean from the mid-deck, it isn't clear to authorities yet if the leaps were accidental or intentional. A string of incidents this year has cut into the company's demand and forced it to become a bit more promotional than peers. [View news story]

  • The U.S. government will buy up to 10K hybrids to help trim fuel costs for the fleet of government cars. The marching orders come from the GSA which estimates savings of close to 1M gallons of fuel over the lifetime of the vehicles. The agency didn't say which manufacturer it will buy the vehicles from, although presumably General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) will receive some home field advantage. [View news story]
Time will tell if hybrids are a good investment. The cost of a new battery pack scares me away.
