  • The 'Come To Jesus' Earnings Report [View article]
Stop bashing AMZN. It's the biggest non-profit charitable organization in the world. :-)

  • Hempton: Markey a tool of Ackman [View news story]
Whether Herbalife is a pyramid scheme or not I don't know (or care), but the fact that the Senator is working in conjunction with someone shorting the stock he is investigating is rather repugnant.

  • Chances of shutdown increase as House OKs anti-Obamacare measures [View news story]
Yes I know and that's my point. Rope a Dope is saying that Americans don't support Obamacare, but that's mostly because people are uninformed or just don't like anything with the name Obama in it. There are plenty of polls where people are asked about the different components of the Affordable Care Act (eliminating pre-existing conditions and lifetime maximums, covering kids 25 and under on their parents plan, setting up exchanges, etc.) and they show people are very much in support. Some people actually don't support the ACA because it doesn't go far enough.

Do I think it's perfect? No. The argument that it's going to bring America to it's knees is ridiculous. Massachusetts, where they set up "Romneycare", hasn't fallen into the abyss yet.

You're right the majority don't want Obamacare but the majority do want the Affordable Care Act.

  • "High above the Alps my Gnome is hearing a rumor that Apple will announce a stock split at tomorrow's shareholder meeting," tweets Doug Kass. The rumor has led Apple (AAPL +1%) shares to spike higher. Update (2:24 PM): Kass is using the post-rumor spike to sell part of his trading position in Apple. [View news story]
Because as we all know stock splits make the company more valuable. 450 divided by 2 equals 300?

If the rumor is true can someone please investigate why the news was leaked to certain people before coming public?

It's called the "write a negative article about AAPL so I can get a lot of views and comments and make some money" strategy.

  • The Future Of Seeking Alpha [View article]
I agree Michael. I briefly signed up for Pro but realized that it was nearly impossible to get in before the stock ran up (certainly before anyone could do any actual due diligence). The vast majority of the time you can buy the stocks a week later at a better price. Most of these stocks (like ESSX) are so small and/or illiquid that it only takes a small handful of people to drive the price up very quickly.

Chris is one of the authors who I enjoy reading on SA, but I can read 100 articles from 100 different authors before I find one stock I really like. I'd have a hard time paying for just one person (sorry Chris!).

  • Why I'm A Passive Investor (And You Should Be Too) [View article]
"a) they don't typically have anywhere near the access to information that institutional investors do"

Isn't that what this site is for? In fact I've found better information on Seeking Alpha than I have in most analyst reports from respected firms. Besides I can read a 10Q just like the institutional investors can.

"And while it's true that some active managers do outperform over even long periods, the evidence is very strong that there's no persistent performance beyond the randomly expected"

So you are saying that any private investor, hedge fund manager, or mutual fund manager who beats the market consistently is just lucky? I'll call up Soros and Tepper and let them know they aren't as good as they think they are. Most of the studies I've seen compare the performance of index funds to actively managed mutual funds and there are a variety of reasons why active funds don't outperform. I'd certainly agree with you that the vast majority of people do a poor job of buying stock on their own and I certainly recommend most people stick with index funds. However I'd like you to show me a study that shows it's impossible for a personal investor to be better not just because of 'randomness'. I've beat the market handily over the past 20 years and know many people who have as well. I certainly don't think it was luck.

Now pardon me while I go drink my wine and read another Seeking Alpha article.

  • Bernanke press conference: Should projections hold, Bernanke sees QE ending "around mid-year" 2014 and the unemployment rate being about 7% at that time. Responding to a question, he says the FOMC stands ready to quickly adjust - i.e. fire purchases back up - should it prove to have made a mistaken forecast. Stocks (SPY -0.5%) and Treasurys (TLT -1.2%) are at session lows. [View news story]
Would you rather see what would have happened if he didn't implement QE? Especially with a do nothing Congress.

  • It's Tough To Buy Verizon When Vodafone Shares Are In The Bargain Bin [View article]
The growth will eventually come in Europe, but will take a while due to the recession there. In the meantime I'm happy to collect a nice yield. VOD also has good potential in emerging markets.

The fear now among the analysts seems to be that VOD might buy some cable company in Germany.

All I know is when you take the sum of the parts the company is definitely undervalued.

  • Sprint Nextel: This Telecom Not Worth Its $2 Price Tag [View article]
I'm just about done with Seeking Alpha. Too many ridiculous articles like this one.

    - The closing down of Nextel's network is a huge plus. It's a huge expense and frees up a lot of spectrum for Sprint.
    - Push to talk is very common among businesses. The main problem was that other companies started offering it as well.
    - If you had bothered to read the article you referenced (which was from 2009), Verizon never said they were going to buy Vodafone... which by the way isn't a competitor of Sprint.
    - 2GB of data is not that much. I, like many other people, routinely exceed that amount.
    - The best points are the ones you seem to dismiss - they are gaining customers faster than the other carriers and they are getting good scores in customer service, which is very important when choosing between a number of companies with similar offerings.

Did you really get an MBA? I think you should sue the school.

  • Feeling the pressure from Samsung, Apple (AAPL) is mulling the launch over the next year of so-called phablets - iPhones with 4.7" and 5.7" screens - reports Reuters, whose sources include those in the Asian supply chain. Also on the agenda are cheaper iPhone models, perhaps in the $99 range. "They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment," cautions one of the sources. [View news story]
I don't think 4.7" is a phablet. I have the Galaxy S3 and it's 4.8". Seriously though, they are 'mulling' it??? They should have been working on this a long time ago. I think Apple is going to run themselves right over a cliff.
