  • Which Dry Bulk Shipper Should You Buy? [View article]
i have several shippers right now. but i consider them multi-year trades. the economics of shipping makes me uncomfortable in considering them as long term income oriented stocks. they have a pronounced boom-bust cycle.

i think buying them during the bust and selling them during the boom is the strategy i am comfortable with. but that isn't necessarily the only way to treat them.

  • Which Dry Bulk Shipper Should You Buy? [View article]
no chance at all for a dividend cut. DSX has a $0 dividend at the moment. the last few times i listened to an earnings call, they said they would reinstate a dividend when they were at the upper part of the shipping cycle ( that is, when they are throwing off very high free cash flow).

the analysis here in this article seems to completely ignore the other half of dry bulk. Its hard to take it seriously if you don't even discuss the order book and scrap rate.

I agree with you. Coal is difficult. A new administration might help, however. and JRCC going bankrupt will definitely help.

  • Citigroup's Stumble Is Your Opportunity To Buy [View article]
    thanks for the article.

I bought some last week after the CCAR. Hadn't intended to, since I had been buying BAC since the single digits, but when given an opportunity, you may as well enjoy it.

  • Bank Of America: More Cost Cuts On The Way [View article]
donjean4, BAC just signed an agreement to extend the period of Warren Buffett's preferred shares to 5 years before BAC can recall them. They did this in order to improve their capital ratios.

so i think you are mistaken about "reducing ... arrangements ... warren buffett". That is, unless you mean "reducing preferred shares in general with the exception of Warren Buffett's". If you meant that you'd be correct, but you would have stated that in a very unusual way.

  • General Electric: Get Ready For The 'Synchrony Financial' IPO [View article]
From what i read in the past, I got the impression GE shareholders will only get the spin off shares by exchanging their GE shares. This is generally not going to the shareholders. And even that exchange will be for the 80% remaining. Not necessarily the initial 20%.

  • Target looks for traction in Canada [View news story]
Bob, i feel similar. I am interested in nibbling, but only if canada is not a major problem. It has sold off nicely, but if they are throwing good money after bad, it could sell off even more. I don't have a feel whether this is a blip on the radar, or a major problem.

  • Diana Containerships Continues Transition [View article]
i heard their earnings call a couple of days ago. when asked directly, they said they could continue the dividend at this level for 18 months (based on the balance sheet) or they could use that money to buy more assets which would improve their longer-term cash flow.
