I am currently a retired Aerospace Engineer. I am married with three children and eight grandchildren. I was born in San Francisco, CA in 1949 and moved to Newport News, VA in 1951 where I lived until I went to college. By God's grace, I received a B.S. degree from Virginia Tech (1972), a M.S. degree from Caltech (1973), and a M.A. - Biblical Studies degree from Birmingham Theological Seminary (2013). I worked at Pratt & Whitney (1973-1986) and CFD Research Corporation (1987-2008).
Now in retirement and trying to preserve my life savings, I currently have a strong interest in tactical asset allocation strategies, and have studied them extensively. I have developed a number of tactical strategies involving the periodic trading of ETFs and, more recently, mutual funds. These strategies have been backtested mainly using Portfolio Visualizer and ETFreplay software. The goal is to earn 10-15% annually with no negative years, and to have maximum drawdowns of less than 10%, preferably less than 5%. The strategies include purchasing a limited number of funds with the highest growth and lowest volatility, and minimizing risk using moving average, dual momentum, and risk parity methods. I have developed strategies for equity as well as bond assets.
I'm the editor of UK Value Investor, an investment website and newsletter for defensive value investors. I have been an investor since the 1990s and since 2010 I have been developing and applying a "defensive value" approach to building a high yield, low risk share portfolio.
This strategy is unique in that it focuses on a series of quantitative financial measures that look back through 10 years of financial results to find companies that have the best combination of quality and growth at the best prices.
I also write the blog at UKValueInvestor.com, and occasionally publish other content such as guides and spreadsheets.
Having left school at 16, I trained as a mechanical engineer but later switched to a career in insurance software. That lasted for more than a decade until I started my newsletter business in 2011.
My book, “The Defensive Value Investor”, covers my investment strategy in detail.

Past performance can not predict future performance. Capital invested is capital at risk and especially when leverage is used large, some if not all of the principal can be lost. Please consult your financial advisor if such a service is right for you. The performance data shown includes back-tested past performance, which is not a guarantee of future results. I manage the capital of only a handful of families and I see it as my number one job to protect their financial security. They don’t pay me to sell them investment products, beat an index, abandon true investing for mindless diversification or follow the Wall Street lemmings down the primrose path. I manage their money exactly as I manage my own so I don’t take any risk at all unless I strongly believe it is worth taking.
Blogging here on SA is part of my research. I write to find out what I think.

I am an independent trader. I began actively trading in 2008 and my perspective is shaped by the collapse of 2008 and the incredible rally of 2009. My approach consists of seeking out fundamentally strong stocks that are unloved by the market and then assessing general market conditions to manage risk.
Outside of the markets, I enjoy playing tennis, working out, and pushing myself to conquer my fear of public speaking.
I trade volatility ETPs (SVXY, XIV, UVXY), S&P 500 through SPY, UPRO, SPXU, and invest long term in Dividend Growth stocks with high dividend CAGR values. Individual stock picking is a waste of time to me unless the company pays out large and high growth dividends. Macro mixed with Volatility investing is how I trade long and short the market. I have developed a VIX Draw Cycle strategy to go long and short the market. RTS v1.0
I was trained in finance, but work in strategy. I invest very infrequently, and balance my portfolio once a year. I buy and hold hold indices and volatility ETFs. I trade a little bit on the side, but that's pure gambling, for fun.
