  • Amid Retail Upturn, J.C. Penney Delivers On Turnaround Story [View article]
They need to close stores in the out of date non performing malls. I strongly encourage them to not waste any time with that.

  • JCP By The Numbers [View instapost]
Trend looks stronger but considering that it was horrendously bad before not sure it really matters. Ullman looking to get out because he has picked all the low hanging fruit. I expect this retailer will continue to stumble along at this level of low, marginal results for 2015. They really need to close 200 non performing stores.

  • Watch Out Apple, Xiaomi Is Coming To Each One Of Your Segments [View article]
You are confirming that Xiaomi will continue to grow and prosper by appealing to a large segment of the Chinese population. You can call them loser or whatever derogatory term you find appropriate, but from what I can see, you should call them devoted customers. When Apple first came out, a lot of unkind things were said about their customers as well. I won't repeat it because that would be inappropriate and not accurate.

  • Will Ellison Get Chance To Turn JC Penney Around? [View article]
I think that the real challenge at JCP is to get consumers really excited about their products. A 4 - 5% uptick in sales is not indicative of that. Especially after a 30% drop. That challenge is particularly difficult in today's jaded climate.

That being said, I hope the board and Ullman give the new CEO a fighting chance to succeed. If they saddle him with non performing stores, even a 3% increase in sales will be tough to go get after 2014. The worst stores should be closed. I suspect there are at least 200 of them.

  • J.C. Penney: The News From Analyst Day Appears Good On Balance [View article]
I understand that their was less clearance inventory to work with in generating low margin sales. They still projected a sales increase overall. What I think management is reacting to is a lack of certitude in their strategy. The market is reacting to that. If and when better results start to come in, then that will change. JCP has been very vocal about how well they will do. It is still a wait and see situation for now.

  • J.C. Penney: The News From Analyst Day Appears Good On Balance [View article]
Very good comment, sir, but the truth might be that it just took them by surprise and they are not yet prepared to answer the questions you are asking. As for your raw flesh comment, I would not know how to answer that.

  • Holiday retail sales forecast to rise 4.5% [View news story]
A lot of it will depend on what the hot items are this year. Outside of the Apple 6, not sure what the latest toys are.

  • J.C. Penney: Time To Buy The Spectacular Turnaround [View article]
"When everything looked down and out for Penney, the company came out with strong fourth-quarter results, driven by same-store sales growth of 2%"

Previous year results comp sales were down over 24%. I think your statement should be challenged. The wording I would expect to see would be, there was a marginal increase in sales versus the previous year quarter. How about the following notion? The free fall in sales that has characterized JCP's results for the previous 8 quarters has stabilized somewhat.

I am not minimizing the efforts from the remaining front line staff or the remaining head office employees as I believe they are the ones who have faced the brunt of the mismanagement that has taken place. It should be noted that guidance for the coming year is approximately 3-5% for 2014. After having fallen over 25% in sales, this cannot be viewed as a turnaround or even the business becoming stable.

My belief is that non performing stores are dragging down the potential turnaround. That factor is rarely discussed on SA or by management. Bad inventory can be liquidated back to cash when required to reinvest in more profitable lines (an ongoing learning process typical in retail), but the closing of stores is a much more complex and image damaging exercise. Sooner or later it will have to be addressed. Hopefully it won't be done through bankruptcy.

  • J.C. Penney Is A Natural Comeback Story [View article]
Yes, stacking the deck and it still may not come through. At 5% sss guidance they want to look like heroes, but really just hiding markdowns. Also begs the question did they take all the MD they should for 4th qtr 2013. You won't really know for a few quarters as they stack inventory and maybe not get the results. It's called playing for time while pumping the stock up. The point I was making is that when inventory is up and sales aren't, like in the 4th qtr, then gm is suspect. We won't know for a few quarters while management plays for time.

  • J.C. Penney Is A Natural Comeback Story [View article]
Inventory is up 20% and management's guidance is a 3 - 5% increase in sales. Really doesn't show a lot of confidence on the part of management. Not sure how you're getting that higher inventory will lead to better GM. Just means that the stock will turn more slowly. Slow moving stock leads to more markdowns over time. Retail 101.
