  • Apple sees pre-earnings upgrade, several target cuts; shares near $98  [View news story]
Added to my AAPL today. First time in about a year. I'm expecting this (past) Q's results to be inline with Apple's guidance. Same for the current quarter.

Curious to see if a smaller screen "6" will make an appearance. I think it would be a smart move. My impression is there are a lot of iPhone users that would like to update their "small" screens including all the other updates and larger memory.

  • Ugly start to new year  [View news story]
Ghost cities and SOEs. This should really be no surprise. Central planning is pretty difficult to execute flawlessly, so the chickens are coming home to roost with an oversupply problem on a global scale. Probably will be an ongoing theme for 2016.

  • These Stocks Are Proven Over Time: 3M Co.  [View article]
For me, that list of global stocks would include PepsiCo, Visa and Becton,Dickinson.

Following those I've chosen Agrium and Apple. I'm sure these are not everyone's picks, but they are suitable for myself.

    Thanks for the question.

I see 3M as one of the few quality global stocks that one can acquire. I would rate it in the top 5 or 6 (along with JNJ which you covered). The only time I think I might sell any shares is if it exceeded 5% of total stock allocation. And would only trim down to no less than 4%. Would do the same with JNJ (and Unilever Plc).

  • These Stocks Are Proven Over Time: Wells Fargo & Co.  [View article]
Ted, I'm getting a slight case of déjà vu here. And you are correct that WFC tends to be more conservative on extending credit. I don't think they are going the securitization route that others have embarked upon in the auto loan business. Still ....

I am also aware they also have an energy loan portfolio that needs to be monitored.

First, let me say I enjoyed your article. The 2 dividend comparisons with the current one was informative.

Secondly I've been a WFC shareholder since about September 2006 (after the share split that year) and DRIP'd it throughout the GFC. I took it off of that, as well as others in late 2011, evened up the share count and then added once more in late 2012 when I thought a dividend increase was forthcoming. Have not added since. Quickly looking at my account(s) it represents about 2.6% of my stock holdings, so it's slightly above average there, but less so on an income basis. Over the time I've owned the stock (9+ years) it's appreciated about 70%. I tend not to worry about it too much and is the only US bank I would consider owning.

While I am not greatly concerned at this time, I am being vigilant about what appears to be less than stellar underwriting standards (not necessarily specific to WFC) in the auto loan segment in the US financial markets. I will not hesitate to reduce/eliminate my holding if my research starts indicating a problem is building.

    Again, good article.

  • Telus chief, family trust buy C$10M in common shares at market  [View news story]
:) Added to my position on the day after the Shaw Comm announcement a couple of pennies below Darren E's price. I'll take that as a confirmation it was an OK price going forward. It was lower at the opening of that day though.

Sadly, it involved somewhat fewer shares that he and his family trust acquired.

  • Shaw Communications buys into wireless with C$1.6B WIND acquisition  [View news story]
Market has over reacted to this, plus at least 2 downgrades as of 1:00 pm in NY for Telus, BCE and Rogers. Assuming Shaw can execute this well is not certain (former SJR shareholder). Thus, I added to my Telus holdings on TSX @ C$37.xx

This is a bit of a surprise. But with the amount of cord cutting going on maybe it shouldn't have been. Interesting times ahead for the three big telco incumbents (BCE, Telus and Rogers).

  • Dialog Semiconductor warning touches Apple, suppliers  [View news story]
    @ gpalermo64,
Apple seems to be on a buying spree of former semiconductor facilities. Now, either T. Cook has decided to become a REIT kingpin or he has the intent to use them for the purpose which they were mostly designed for. That is prudent (to retro-fit) rather than building anything greenfield, and besides that would telegraph their intentions.

Will they be used for production? Maybe/maybe not; but they would make good labs and pilot plants for design ideas. And design of all components would seem to fit Apple's DNA ~ including power management.

It seems not too long ago that a slow down in China's economy was going to affect Apple's revenue according to analysts. I know how that turned out.
